Area Prep Softball Report for Wednesday, March 29

After losing District 9-5A games to Mount Carmel Academy and Dominican, John Curtis Christian was determined not to lose again.

That was most certainly the case Tuesday as the Patriots dominated a good Archbishop Chapelle team, winning 10-0 in River Ridge in a game shortened to six innings by the mercy rule.

Katelyn Kempton shut down the Chipmunks to pick up the shutout win, pitching a one-hitter, allowing a first inning hit to Delaney Trosclair. Kempton walked just one, hit a batter and struck out seven.

Kai Goodman went 4 for 4 at the plate with a triple, two doubles and two singles and drove in a pair of runs. Madison Laiche added a three-run homer, one of her two hits in the game.

Kayla Giardina took the loss for Chapelle.

John Curtis (20-7, 1-2) returns to district play Thursday at home against Karr at 4:30 p.m.

Chapelle (20-3, 2-1) will resume its game with Mount Carmel Academy Thursday at Muss Bertolino Playground at 5 p.m. The Chipmunks have a 2-0 lead in the game which was stopped last week when two Cub players collided and were injured.

Pope John Paul II won a 9-8 thriller at Jewel Sumner.

The Jaguars led 3-2 after one inning before the Cowgirls took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the second inning. Pope John Paul II answered with two in the third to lead 5-4 but Jewel Sumner scored a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-5.

Pope John Paul II scored four runs in the top of the fourth to make it 9-5. Jewel Sumner scored three in the bottom of the sixth to complete the scoring.

Kady Benedic had two hits, including a homer and four RBI for the Jaguars while Kayla Benedic drove in three runs. Kasia Rodriguez had three hits and two RBI and Hannan Potter added three hits and scored twice.

Ashley Chighizola got the win, going five innings, with Ella Babin pitching the final two innings to get the save.

Pope John Paul II (15-3) has won eight straight games and will host Pearl River Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Jewel Sumner (14-13) will host Episcopal Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
