A combination of youth and experience can go a long way in most sports – a point the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A All-State baseball and softball teams prove in a big way. Freshman Marshall Louque and veteran coach Ryan Jensen swept the top honors in baseball after leading Lutcher to its first LHSAA baseball title in nearly a decade. Returning all-state player Kamryn Broussard of Iowa and second-year head coach Justin Kees of champion Buckeye lead the softball squad. Each team was powered by a player who earned top honors in the LSWA’s Class 3A All-State teams. Myca Trail, a UL-Monroe signee, was selected as the girls Outstanding Player after averaging 18.7 ppg, 7.3 rebs, six steals, three assists per game while leading St. Louis to a 32-3 record and second consecutive Division II championship. BATON ROUGE - It was a year in waiting for Brother Martin. After finishing a surprising and high disappointing fourth in Division I in 2021, the Crusaders returned to the scene of the crime at Raising Canes River Center. This time around, the Crusaders cleansed that mark of a year ago on their brilliant record, capturing the Division I state championship in solid fashion Saturday night, scoring 261.5 points. BATON ROUGE - Form held on the first day of the Ochsner/LHSAA state wrestling championships at the Raising Canes River Center in Baton Rouge with all three favorites in each division looking the part in solid fashion while a traditional power in Division III threatens to invade the top spot on the podium Saturday. Defending state champion Basile is still the team to beat in the 2022 LHSAA Division III state wrestling tournament this Friday and Saturday at Raising Cane’s River Center in Baton Rouge. The Bearcats have four top seeds among the seeds announced Monday evening. Those include Andre Johnson (126), Luc Johnson (138), Christian Bergeron (182) and Anphrony Guillory (285).
