Baton Rouge High girls win LHSCA wrestling tourney

Girls Wrestling will become an official LHSAA sport in 2024-25, based on a vote passed this past week at the LHSAA convention in Baton Rouge. Saturday, the Louisiana High School Coaches Association held its All-Star tournament at Baton Rouge High and the host team emerged victorious Saturday. With 23 schools competing, Baton Rouge High outdistanced Brusly to win the event with South Beauregard third. Winners for Baton Rouge were Lea Leduff (150), Olivia Maxie (165) and Allison Flores (215). The lone winner from metro New Orleans was Jenelle Rotunda of Chalmette (157). It was a busy night on the mat Wednesday around the area. Defending Division I state champion Jesuit took down traditional power Brusly 57-15. The Blue Jays won seven of the 11 matches contested. Scoring falls for Jesuit were Jude de Gruy (120), Jose Rincon (132), Carter Corsetti (157), Patrick Mathews (175), Will Berry (215) and nationally ranked Spencer Lanosga (285). St. Paul’s served notice that it will be a serious player in Division I wrestling Wednesday. The Wolves whipped always tough Catholic of Baton Rouge 41-17 in dual meet action. St. Paul’s won by dominating the higher weight classes, winning the five matches in those classes and taking nine of the 14 matches contested. Written for the LSWA Dominick Letort of Lakeshore and North DeSoto’s Aly Delafield headline the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 4A All-State baseball and softball teams.
