It has been an arduous, adventurous, adverse, awe-inspiring journey for Brother Martin head football coach Mark Bonis over the last few years.

Born and raised in the New Orleans area, Bonis attended Jesuit High School, playing tight end. He walked-on at Southern Mississippi and ended up serving as a student assistant coach.

Bonis then coached at Sam Houston State, before returning to coach in high school at Archbishop Shaw as an assistant coach for three years.

Then, Bonis was hired as offensive coordinator at Brother Martin in 2006, serving in that capacity before being promoted to head coach of the Crusaders in 2009.

Bonis just concluded his 12th season in that capacity, leading Brother Martin to an unbeaten regular season and the top seed in the Division I playoffs, reaching the state semifinals. Bonis has compiled an impressive 87-45 record with four state semifinal appearances overall.

Bonis is faithfully married to Rebecca and they have twin daughters, Blake and Brynn.

They also have a son, appropriately nicknamed “Mighty Marc.”

The son has endured a difficult life, born with omphalocele, a very rare birth defect in which the intestines and/or other organs are situated outside the body due to a hole in the navel area.

After flirting with death, Marc has fought, surgery has corrected the abnormality and he has recovered after a harrowing couple of years for the family.

Meanwhile the father had his own ordeal.

Bonis nearly lost his life after emergency coronary artery surgery to repair a ruptured abdominal aorta in December of 2019.

Bonis endured, fought off death and has recovered.

In the midst of dealing with that setback, there was job loss in the family as well.

While he is an excellent football coach, universally respected, Bonis is a better person and believes that his faith, instilled in him at a young age, has been his bedrock, enabling him to overcome so much adversity.
