Softball: Ponchatoula wins twice Saturday

Area Prep Softball Report for Sunday, April 7

Ponchatoula posted a pair of wins in tournament play Saturday, defeating Pope John Paul II 4-3 and pounding De La Salle 22-0.

In the win over the Jaguars, the Greenies came from behind as Pope John Paul II took a 3-1 lead after two innings before tying it with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ponchatoula walked it off with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Sydni Stanga had two hits and three RBI, Abby Dagro had an RBI and Olivia Hutchinson double and singled to pace the Greenies. Stanga started on the mound and Dagro got the win, going 3 1/3 shutout innings, allowing just one hit with a walk and two strikeouts.

The Greenies ripped the Cavaliers 22-0 in a game shortened to 2 ½ innings by the mercy rule.

Ponchatoula scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and put the game away with 17 runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Dagro belted a pair of home runs and drove in five runs, Stanga homered and drove in two runs while Christina Curtis, Grace Schwaibold and Brilynn Singh each had a hit and two RBI. Dagro pitched three hitless innings with three strikeouts.

Ponchatoula (21-7) has won three straight games. The Green Wave, currently fourth in the Non-Select Division I power ratings, close their regular season at home Tuesday against Doyle at 5 p.m.
