Softball Playoffs: Riverdale, John Ehret end long droughts with wins; Ponchatoula, Fontainebleau win thrillers

Area Prep Softball Playoff Report for Tuesday, April 18

A pair of Jefferson Parish public school softball programs ended long playoff droughts between postseason wins Monday.

In Select Division I action, No. 11 Riverdale defeated No. 22 McMain 15-0 in three innings at Jefferson Playground.

Tamryn King went the distance, striking out eight of the nine outs recorded and she had two hits with three RBI. Lindsey Johnston was 2 for 2 with a pair of RBI. Carly Rosas added two RBI.

The win is the first playoff victory for Riverdale since 2000.

The Rebels (19-8) advance to travel to No. 6 Alexandria Tuesday at 5 p.m.

No. 14 John Ehret outlasted No. 19 Woodlawn of Baton Rouge 10-9 for the first playoff win since 2005 for the Patriots.

Ehret won it in dramatic fashion, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win it. Carli Brathbury tripled to start the rally before Gabbie Johnson walked. Abrielle Langford reached on a fielder’s choice and Destin Walker had an infield hit, scoring Johnson to make it 9-8 with Langford advancing to third.

Alyanna Atchison capped the rally with a game-winning, two-run double, scoring Langford and Walker.

The game went back and forth with Woodlawn taking a 1-0 first inning lead before Ehret took a 2-1 lead in the second inning. Woodlawn tied it in the third at 2-2 but the Patriots answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2. The Panthers erupted for six runs in the top of the fourth to lead 8-3 but Ehret scored four in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 8-7. Woodlawn make it 9-7 with a run in the fifth, setting the stage for the winning rally.

Briana Garcia picked up the win.

The Patriots (19-5) advance to face powerful third seed John Curtis Christian Tuesday at 5 p.m. in River Ridge.

Also in Select Division I, No. 9 Mount Carmel Academy had an easy time with No. 24 Byrd 15-0 in a game shortened to two and a half innings at Muss Bertolino Playground in Kenner. The Cubs (15-11) advance to play at No. 8 St. Joseph’s Academy Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

No. 10 Dominican doubled up No. 23 St. Scholastica 16-8 at Harahan Playground.

Tied 1-1 heading to the bottom of the third inning, Dominican scored seven runs to make it 8-1. It was 11-3 after four innings and each team scored five runs in the fifth to account for the final score.

Ava Lusco had two doubles, a single and six RBI while Maddie Branch had two doubles, a single and three RBI to pace Dominican. Raegan Porche was 4 for 4 with two RBI and Sophia Martin had two hits and two RBI. Aubrey Daigrenpont went the distance to get the win, allowing six earned runs on nine hits.

Karsen Boyet took the loss for the Doves (6-17). Jaycee Sercovich had three hits for SSA while Ava Au had a hit and two RBI. Aubrianne Kavanaugh had two hits and an RBI.

Dominican (21-10) advances to play at No. 7 Acadiana Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the regional round.

No. 12 Captain Shreve blitzed No. 21 Karr 15-0 in three innings. The Gators (21-9) advance to battle No. 5 Archbishop Chapelle Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a game that you can watch live on CrescentCitySports.com.

No. 13 Northwood eliminated No. 20 West Jefferson 11-1 in six innings.

No. 15 Lafayette handled No. 18 Warren Easton 15-0 in three innings.

In the Division I Non-Select opening round, No. 17 Ponchatoula outscored No. 16 Hahnville 10-9 in a thriller at Boutte.

It was a wild contest in which the Green Wave jumped all over the Tigers to take a commanding 8-0 lead going to the bottom of the fifth but Hahnville rallied, scoring three in the that frame to make it 8-3. Ponchatoula answered with two in the top of the sixth to lead 10-3 but the Tigers scored three in the bottom of the inning and it was 10-6. Hahnville rallied with three in the bottom of the seventh but fell just short.

It was home run derby with each team blasting three homers.

Abby Dagro, Christina Curtis and Rae’el Wheat each homered for Ponchatoula while Brianna Keller, Brazzi Jacob and Karli Bourg homered for Hahnville.

Ponchatoula (22-12) advances to meet No. 1 seed St. Amant Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Gonzales.

No. 8 Northshore blanked No. 25 New Iberia 8-0.

Appalachian State signee Jenna Samuel once again dominated on the mound, allowing just two hits while striking out 15 in a superb performance.

Maddy Silva had a 2-run triple to pace the attack while Olivia Roy also drove in a pair of runs. Ella Sanchez added a pair of hits.

Shaylee Gibson had two hits for the Yellow Jackets and she took the loss.

Northshore (24-6) advances to the regional round to host No. 9 Central. The Wildcats fought off No. 24 Covington 3-1. Maicee Perniciaro pitched well but took the loss for the Lions, allowing just two earned runs. Catelyn Yeager had a hit and drove in the lone run for Covington.

No. 10 Fontainebleau edged No. 23 Benton 7-6 for its first playoff victory since 2017.

The Bulldogs rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win it.

Fontainebleau led 4-1 after three innings but the Tigers scored a run in the fourth to make it 4-2 and Benton took a 5-4 lead with three runs in the fifth and a 6-4 lead with a run in the top of the sixth, setting the stage for the comeback by the Bulldogs.

Pinch-hitter Bailor Wells started the winning rally when she was hit by a pitch. Madison Gendusa singled and Kaitlyn Cortez walked to load the bases. The Bulldogs scored a run on a groundout to make it 6-5 and Rylee Gandy tied the game with a sacrifice fly and it was 6-6. Cortez then scored what proved to be the winning run on a wild pitch.

Emily Graham added an RBI double for the Bulldogs. Graham picked up the win, allowing six runs on eight hits with three walks and nine strikeouts.

The Bulldogs (15-5) advance to travel north to No. 7 West Ouachita, who shut out No. 26 Slidell 6-0. Jaida Sorapuru had two hits for the Tigers in a losing cause.

No. 15 East Ascension rallied from a 5-0 deficit to defeat No. 18 Chalmette 9-6 in Gonzales. Maddie Rockwell homered and doubled in a losing cause for the Owls. Maddie Hammer had a two-run single, Kailee Ostendorf had a sacrifice fly, Ella Tabora had an RBI single and Lexi Smith drove in a run.

In the Non-Select Division II bracket, No. 8 Assumption took out No. 25 Leesville 10-0 in a game shortened to four and a half innings by the mercy rule.

No. 9 Grant eliminated No. 24 Pearl River 3-0. Rylee Smith pitched a solid game but took the loss for the Rebels.

No. 7 Lutcher blasted No 26 Bastrop 15-0 in a game shortened to three innings by the mercy rule. The Bulldogs (18-10) advance to take on No. 10 North Vermilion, who beat No. 23 Loranger 11-6.

No. 12 Minden defeated No. 21 Franklinton 2-0.

No. 15 Belle Chasse advanced with a 6-4 victory over No. 18 Lakeshore.

The game was tied 1-1 after one inning before Belle Chasse scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 lead as Caitlyn Sprunk tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carlie Couvillion before freshman Dyavani Battle singled home a pair of runs.

Lakeshore cut the deficit to 4-3 with single runs in the top of the third and fourth innings but Belle Chasse answered with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make it 6-3. Battle doubled and scored on an error in the fifth inning and drove in the final Belle Chasse run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Battle went 3 for 3 with three RBI and scored twice. Junior right-hander Samantha Hill picked up the win, going the distance, allowing seven hits. Hill walked four and struck out seven.

Aubrey Gaudet had an RBI double for the Titans while Abby Colwart and Lauren Veilette each had an RBI single. Colwart took the loss for Lakeshore, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Cardinals (13-10) advance to play at No. 2 Albany in the regional round.

In Division III Non-Select, No. 16 Pine edged No. 17 Berwick 7-6. The Raiders (12-7) will play at top seed Sterlington in the second round.

No. 13 Rosepine whipped No. 20 St. James 9-2.

No. 15 Mamou eliminated No. 18 Springfield 8-2.

No. 19 Jewel Sumner went on the road and took out No. 14 Marksville 13-6.

In Non-Select Division IV, No. 7 Oakdale demolished No. 26 West St. John 21-0 in a game shortened to two and a half innings by the mercy rule.

No. 9 Lakeside drilled No. 24 Centerville 16-1.

No. 16 South Plaquemines handled No. 17 Haynesville 17-5 in a game shortened fo five innings by the mercy rule. The Hurricanes (10-12) will play Wednesday at 4 p.m. at top seed LaSalle.

In Select Division II, No. 10 Kenner Discovery knocked out No. 21 John F. Kennedy 15-0 at the JPRD Complex in a game shortened to three innings. The Swamp Owls (13-8) will play No. 7 Haynes Academy Wednesday at 6 p.m. at JPRD.

No. 12 St. Louis Catholic easily defeated No. 21 Landry 19-0 in a game shortened to two and a half innings. The Saints advance to play No. 5 De La Salle in the regional round at the JPRD Complex.

No. 13 Cabrini decked No. 20 Peabody 17-2 in three innings.

Cabrini scored seven runs in the bottom of the first, four in the second and after the Warhorses scored two in the top of the third, the Crescents ended it with six runs in the bottom of the third.

Cabrini belted 14 hits, including four doubles and a triple. Abby Harrison had two hits and three RBI while Mick Richoux and Lindsey Thibodaux each had two hits and two RBI. Makenna Borne added a hit and two RBI. Ashley Normand was 3 for 3 with an RBI and Sophia Felps had two hits and scored twice.

Richoux picked up the win, allowing just one earned run in three innings. Richoux walked one and struck out four.

The Crescents (16-11) will travel to No. 4 David Thibodaux Wednesday at 4 p.m.

In Select Division III, No. 9 Holy Savior Menard defeated No. 24 St. Mary’s Academy 17-2 in three innings. Menard will travel to Metairie to face No. 8 Country Day Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Regional Round action.

No. 10 Parkview Baptist smacked No. 23 Ursuline Academy 16-0 in four innings. The Eagles will next play No. 7 Patrick Taylor Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Westwego Playground.

No. 11 Northlake Christian handled district rival and No. 22 seed St. Thomas Aquinas 15-0 in four innings. Abigail Willie pitched a no-hitter, striking out four Falcons. The Wolverines broke it open with 11 runs in the bottom of the third inning. Maitland Popham belted three doubles and drove in four runs while Sam Raimondi, Makenna Sparks and Willie each drove in two runs.

Willie threw four innings of no-hit softball with seven strikeouts to get the win.

The Wolverines (13-12) advance to travel to No. 6 D’Arbonne Woods Charter.

No. 13 Thomas Jefferson whipped No. 20 Acadiana Renaissance Charter 11-1 in a game shortened to six innings. The Jaguars (11-13) will travel to No. 4 Houma Christian Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the regional round.

No. 15 Fisher defeated No. 18 Beekman Charter 7-4. The Gators (12-11) advance to play at second-seeded Notre Dame Tuesday at 4 p.m.

No. 16 Catholic of New Iberia beat No. 17 Newman 10-0 in a game shortened to six innings.

In Select Division IV, No. 9 Ascension Catholic ended No. 24 McGehee’s season with a 16-1 victory in three innings.

No. 10 Covenant Christian easily dismissed No. 23 False River 16-0 in four innings.

No. 11 St. Mary’s of Natchitoches stopped No. 22 St. Martin’s Episcopal 18-3 in four innings.
