Prep Soccer Playoff Report for Thursday, Feb. 8

Rematches are always tough, particularly when they occur against perhaps your biggest rival.

No. 1 seed Jesuit certainly experienced that truism Wednesday.

The Blue Jays needed two overtime periods to finally overcome No. 17 Brother Martin 2-0 at Farley Field on the Brother Martin campus Wednesday afternoon.

Unable to penetrate the tight, pressing defense of the Crusaders and solid goaltending by Brennen Hitch most of the afternoon, Jesuit finally broke through with a goal by Quinn Grandbouche on a header off an assist from Mateo Mancos. Aidan Obletz ensured the victory four minutes later with a second goal.

Jesuit had beaten Brother Martin 3-0 Jan. 26 in a District 8-I contest.

This match would be different but the result was the same.

Jesuit continues to great outstanding goalkeeping and remains air-tight defensively. The Blue Jays have yielded just six goals in 22 matches this season and have shut out 17 opponents.

Jesuit (18-1-2) advances to the quarterfinals to host No. 8 St. Amant. The Gators shut out No. 9 Sulphur 4-0 Wednesday.

Brother Martin ended its season 7-9-4.

In Division II, No. 1 seed Holy Cross advanced to the quarterfinals with a convincing 9-1 win at No. 17 David Thibodaux.

Holy Cross took control from the start and led 5-0 at halftime.

Andrew Touro had a huge night with four goals for the Tigers.

In Division III, top seed and defending state champion The Willow School advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-1 victory at No. 17 Tara.

Maddox Mailho made sure that it would be a good evening for the Lions, scoring three goals.

Mailho put the Lions on top in the 20th minute on a header off a corner kick by Amos Liles.

In the 36th minute, Mailho scored on a penalty kick to make it 2-0 by halftime.

The Lions took a 3-0 lead on a goal from Ellett Clem-Stockton on an assist from Gabe Pizzollato.

After Tara cut the deficit to 3-1, Mailho finished it off an assist from Clum-Stockton.

The Willow School (20-0-4) remained unbeaten and the Lions will host the winner of No. 9 Haynes Academy and No. 8 DeRidder in the quarterfinals. Haynes plays at DeRidder this evening at 6 p.m.

In girls Division I action, No. 8 Mount Carmel Academy edged No. 9 Thibodaux 1-0.

The Cubs (15-5-6) advance to the quarterfinals to play at No. 1 seed St. Joseph’s Academy, who beat No. 16 Fontainebleau 3-1 Tuesday. The Redstickers edged Mount Carmel 1-0 on Nov. 18.

No. 10 Dominican went to No. 7 Mandeville and edged the Skippers 3-2 in overtime in the regional round.

The winning goal came on an own goal in extra time.

The match was tied 1-1 at halftime.

Sophomore Maddie Cantrelle and Stella Zippert each scored a goal for Dominican. Cantrelle added an assist, as did Theresa Newburger.

Claire Aertker and Alicia Ashley scored the goals for the Skippers.

Dominican (20-6-3) advances to the quarterfinals to host No. 18 Barbe, who upset No. 2 Denham Springs 1-0.

Mandeville ended its season 22-6-5.

In Division III, No. 5 seed Archbishop Hannan advanced to the quarterfinals with a 5-0 win at home over No. 12 Ursuline Academy.

Hannan jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead and was never threatened.

Kaitlyn Brady led the Hawks with a pair of goals while Josie Pathoumthong, Kristin Schneider and Maggie Wylie each added a goal. Riley Schubert posted a clean sheet in goal.

Hannan (12-7-5) advances to the quarterfinals to play at No. 4 University Lab, who shut out No. 13 Cecilia 5-0.

In Division IV, No. 11 St. Thomas Aquinas went on the road and thumped No. 6 Westminster Christian 8-0.

The Falcons got it done with a brilliant performance by three players.

Sophomore Bronwyn Doan led the attack with a hat trick and three assists while senior Julia Bouffard also scored three goals. Freshman Sophie Jackson had two goals and two assists.

The Falcons (12-7) advance to play at No. 3 Newman in the quarterfinals.

The Greenies beat No. 14 Calvary Baptist 5-0 Tuesday.

Both the Ben Franklin girls and boys advanced to the quarterfinals with wins.

The seventh-seed Falcon girls downed No. 10 South Terrebonne 6-3 while the third-seed boys downed No. 14 New Orleans Military & Maritime 2-0.
