Prep Baseball Playoff Report for Saturday, May 4

The seeding does not matter.

No. 10 Pearl River went on the road and defeated No. 2 seed Iota 5-3 in game one of the Non-Select Division II best-of-three series Friday.

The Rebels took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning but the Bulldogs scored a run in the second and two in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead.

Pearl River (28-9) answered with two runs in the top of the fourth and a run in the fifth inning to take a big win.

Jacob Clifton went the distance, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits. Clifton did not walk a batter and struck out 11, using 114 pitches, 79 of which were strikes.

Jude Cooley had two hits and two RBI and walked three times for the Rebels. J. McQueen added two hits while Brady Stevens and Delgado commit Trey Turnage each had a hit and an RBI. Jacob Lott also drove in a run for Pearl River.

Zeke Wall took the loss for Iota. Austin Hebert had a hit and two RBI while Dominic Smith had two hits and an RBI for the Bulldogs.

Game two is today at Noon with game three, if necessary, to follow.

In Select Division II, No. 2 seed John Curtis Christian left no doubt in forcing a third and deciding game with No. 7 Brother Martin, trouncing the Crusaders 16-2 at Mike Miley Stadium Friday night.

The Patriots took a 1-0 lead after one inning and broke it open with five runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead. The Patriots made 8-0 with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings before Brother Martin scored its first run in the bottom of the sixth. John Curtis put the game away with seven runs in the top of the seventh inning before the Crusaders got a run in the bottom of the seventh to account for the final margin.

John Curtis (28-7) pounded out 13 hits. Brad Chaisson led the attack with two hits and three RBI while Nate Alario and Dylan Gilbert each had two hits and two RBI. Isaiah Spann had a hit and two RBI.

Dagan Bruno pitched a complete game four-hitter to pick up the win. Bruno walked two and struck out six.

Jack Lupo and Brady McCluskey each homered to provide the lone runs for the Crusaders (23-11).

Brother Martin took game one 10-5 Thursday.

The deciding third game is today at 2 p.m. at Harahan Playground.

No. 8 seed Pope John Paul II scored a thrilling 2-1 win over top seed St. Charles Catholic in LaPlace to even the series at one game apiece.

The Jaguars won it in walk-off fashion on an RBI single by Andrew Hoff in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring Landon Guidry with the winning run.

Pope John Paul II (26-9) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Blaze Rodriguez.

The Comets tied the game in the top of the fourth on a double by Brayden Bertucci and an RBI double by Hudson Heltz.

Kade LaCoste got the win in relief. Logan Cooper started and pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing a run on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Delgado commit Brandon Kragle took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits. Kragle walked three and struck out seven.

St. Charles Catholic (28-8) took game one 7-2.

Game three is today at 1 p.m.

In Non-Select Division I, defending state champion and No. 1 seed Barbe shut out No. 8 Mandeville 6-0. Game two is today at 2 p.m. with game three to follow, if necessary.

In Select Division I, No. 1 Catholic of Baton Rouge completed a two-game sweep of defending state champion and No. 9 seed Jesuit, winning 8-0. Both wins for the Bears were shutout victories.

Loyola signee Ryder Loup pitched a four-hit shutout, allowing just four hits. Loup did not issue a walk and struck out six.

Everett Denny took the loss for the Blue Jays. Luke Werling had two hits for Jesuit (22-13).

LSU commit Jack Ruckert put the Bears ahead to stay with a two-run double in the top of the first inning. Louisiana (Lafayette) commit Brooks Wright added a two-run double. Andrew Clapinski added three hits for the Bears.

Catholic (36-2) advances to Sulphur to face the winner of the series between No. 4 Northwood and No. 12 Acadiana.

No. 6 Alexandria took game one of the best-of-three series with No. 3 Archbishop Rummel 1-0 in a game seen live on CrescentCitySports.com.
