Prep Soccer Playoff Report: St. Paul’s, Holy Cross boys, Destrehan, McGehee girls advance to quarterfinals
Four New Orleans area teams advanced to the state soccer quarterfinals with victories Wednesday.
At Hunter Stadium in Covington, top-seed and four-time defending Division I state champion St. Paul’s fought off a stiff challenge from 16th-seed Brother Martin 1-0 in a match seen live at CrescentCitySports.com.
At Pan American Stadium, top-seed Holy Cross shutout 17th-seed Central Lafourche 2-0 in the Division II regional round.
The Tigers scored a goal in each half with Ethan Garvey scoring in the first half while Elijah Rodriguez scored in the second half. The Tigers had beaten the Trojans by the same 2-0 score at Central Lafourche on Dec. 1.
Holy Cross advances to the quarterfinals to take on the winner of this evening’s match pitting ninth-seed Benton at eighth-seed Woodlawn of Baton Rouge.
In girls action, fifth-seed Byrd edged 12th-seeded Dominican 2-1 at Lee Hedges Stadium in Shreveport.
After a scoreless first half, Madelyn Graham scored both goals for the Yellow Jackets (20-8-3) in the second half to make it 2-0. Kelly Kramer scored for Dominican (15-8-2) late but it was not enough.
Byrd advances to travel to fourth-seed St. Amant in the quarterfinals. The Gators blitzed 13th-seed Airline 8-0.
In Division II, fifth-seed Destrehan took care of 21st-seeded Lee High 6-0. The Wildcats (14-7-1) advance to the quarterfinals to travel to fourth-seeded Lakeshore.
In Division IV, 10th-seed McGehee went on the road and upset seventh-seeded St. Frederick 4-3 in overtime at Monroe. The Hawks (13-3) advance to the quarterfinals to face second-seeded Ascension Episcopal.
