Girls Basketball Playoffs: Ben Franklin, Newman, St. Thomas Aquinas advance with Tuesday wins

Girls Basketball Playoff Report for Wednesday, Feb. 16

In Division II, No. 4 Ben Franklin easily dismissed No. 13 Academy of Our Lady 70-25.

A pair of Lady Falcons posted double-doubles.

Junior Petra Trumbach scored 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds while junior Alivia Benetrix had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Katelyn Jackson finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds and sophomore Allison Honeywood had nine points.

The Lady Falcons (22-11) advance to the quarterfinals to take on the winner of No. 12 Loyola Prep and No. 5 Ursuline Academy, who meet this evening at 5:30 p.m. at Ursuline.

No. 1 seed and defending Division II state champion St. Louis Catholic ended the season of No. 16 Archbishop Hannan with an easy 98-27 victory behind 23 points and seven assists from Paris Guillory. The Saints took control from the start and bolted out to a 58-15 halftime lead.

The Saints (26-3) will next face the winner of this evening’s matchup pitting No. 9 St. Scholastica at No. 8 De La Salle, who will meet at 5:30 p.m. in New Orleans in a game that you can watch live on CrescentCitySports.com.

In Division III, No. 8 St. Mary’s Academy downed No. 9 McGehee 34-24 to advance to the quarterfinals.

St. Mary’s (11-10) will travel to top seed Lafayette Christian in the quarterfinals.

No. 5 St. Thomas Aquinas took care of district rival and 12th seed Pope John Paul II 57-15.

The Lady Falcons (15-10) move on to take on the winner No. 13 Ascension Episcopal and No. 4 Holy Savior Menard in the quarterfinals.

No. 3 Newman remained red hot, defeated No. 14 Northlake Christian 49-20.

Newman took control from the start, leading 19-2 after one quarter and 27-6 by halftime. It was 37-15 going to the fourth quarter.

Sophomores Anaya Yunusah and Talia Parnes led the way with 19 and 15 points, respectively, for the Greenies. Freshman Sanaa Bean added nine points.

The Greenies (22-3) have won 15 straight games and move on to the round of eight to face the winner of tonight’s game featuring No. 11 Catholic of New Iberia at No. 6 St. Charles Catholic.
