Having lost to De La Salle in the state championship game a year ago, second-seeded University Lab was determined to avenge that stinging defeat Tuesday evening at Burton Coliseum.

The Cubs had to fight to the finish but they got their revenge, subduing the third-seeded Cavaliers 64-59 at Lake Charles.

Eric Reed scored 27 points, including eight in the decisive fourth quarter to lead the Cubs to victory.

U-High led 17-10 after one quarter and 32-28 at halftime. The Cavaliers took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Cubs 17-9 to take a 45-41 lead into the final frame but they could not hold it.

Bryton Constantin was outstanding for U-High (21-12) with 12 points and 15 rebounds while Milan Mejia finished with 11 points. Jalen Ned led the Cavaiers (20-11) with 17 points.

U-High goes for a state championship Friday night at 8 p.m. against top-seed St. Thomas More, semifinal winners over fourth-seed Lusher Charter 51-39.
