Area Prep Basketball Report for Sunday, Jan. 16

Archbishop Shaw is a veteran, tough-minded team.

The Eagles needed every ounce of their experience and toughness, rallying from a huge deficit to shock Brother Martin 52-50 Saturday evening at Bob Conlin Gymnasium.

Kam Johnson sank a 15-foot jumper from the left corner with 2.6 seconds left to provide the Eagles with a thrilling victory.

The Crusaders started fast, bolting out to a 15-6 lead after one quarter and led 30-17 at halftime. The lead grew to as many as 20 points in the third quarter and Brother Martin took what seemed to be a comfortable lead of 44-28 going to the fourth quarter.

That is when Shaw blitzed Brother Martin, outscoring the Crusaders 24-6 in the final frame for the victory.

Johnson was brilliant, scoring 28 points, including 15 in the decisive fourth quarter. Isiah Barnes and Jene Bacquet each scored 10 points for the Eagles.

Marvin Jones and Jace Patin each scored 12 points to lead the Crusaders while Corey Skillman had eight points.

Shaw (17-3, 3-0) remained on top in Catholic League play with the win. The Eagles travel to meet St. Augustine Tuesday night at Dillard at 7 p.m. while the Crusaders (16-5, 1-2) will host John Curtis Christian Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

Archbishop Chapelle bounced back from a pair of tough losses to very good teams with a solid 58-40 win at home over Archbishop Hannan Saturday.

Baylie Carroll led the Chipmunks with 15 points, Kaylee Dublin had 14 points and Delaney Trosclair finished with 13 points.

Chapelle (13-6) will entertain Mandeville on Wednesday at 6 p.m. while the Hawks (3-14) return to action Tuesday, hosting Albany at 6 p.m.
