Baseball: John Curtis, St. Charles Catholic continue win streaks

Area Prep Baseball Report for Wednesday, April 10

Traditional power John Curtis Christian is playing its best baseball at the right time of the year.

The Patriots made it seven straight wins, rallying past St. Augustine 7-6 at Wesley Barrow Stadium on Tuesday night in District 9-5A action.

The win is the 12th in 13 games for the red-hot Patriots.

John Curtis had an answer every time the Purple Knights took the lead.

St. Augustine took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning.

John Curtis took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning but the Purple Knights answered immediately, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead.

The Patriots answered the four runs with four of their own in the top of the fifth to recapture the lead at 6-5. St. Augustine tied it in the bottom of the sixth before John Curtis scored the winning run in the top of the seventh.

Conner Micheu was 3-for-3, including a double with three RBI to lead a 10-hit attack for the Patriots. Tyler Mitchell had two hits while Nate Alario, Jason Curtis and Bryce Hebert each had a hit and RBI. Juan Washington added an RBI.

Kenny Rhodes had two hits, including a double with two RBI while Tulane commit Bryce Robinson had three hits, including a double for the Purple Knights.

John Curtis (21-5, 7-3) opens a key district series against Jesuit at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

St. Augustine (12-16, 4-7) is scheduled to play at Ascension Catholic today at 4 p.m. but that is in jeopardy, due to bad weather throughout southeast Louisiana. The Purple Knights will play at Archbishop Shaw at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

St. Charles Catholic continues is tremendous run.

The Comets made it 19 straight wins but it was not easy, edging Archbishop Hannan 4-3 in eight innings at Hannan.

Trailing 3-2, St. Charles Catholic tied it with a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Brayden Bertucci to force extra innings.

The Comets won it with a run in the top of the eighth inning on a two-out, RBI single by Dax Pregeant.

St. Charles Catholic scored single runs in the top of the first and second innings to grab a 2-0 lead. Hannan scored a run in the fourth and took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Pregeant had three hits and two RBI and scored twice while Jackson Monica added three hits for the Comets. Brady St. Pierre added two hits and a run scored while Bertucci had a hit and an RBI. Monica picked up the win, going two scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit, issuing a pair of walks. Brandon Kragle started, going six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits. Kragle walked two and struck out 13.

Austin Pounds had an RBI double while Owen Stempel plated a run on a bunt to give the Hawks the lead in the sixth inning, setting the stage for the rally by the Comets. Sammy Loeb took the loss in relief. Pounds started and went seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on 11 hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Mikey Relle added two hits for Hannan.

St. Charles Catholic (24-5) will look for 20 in a row, hosting Terrebonne at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Hawks (15-12) have dropped five straight games. Hannan will host Jewel Sumner at 6 p.m. Friday.

It has been a tough season for Thomas Jefferson.

The Jaguars lost their first 16 games.

Now, they have won two straight games.

The Jaguars scored a 3-1 win over always tough Archbishop Shaw at Winterscheidt Stadium.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the seventh inning, Thomas Jefferson staged a three-run rally to win it. Kasen Rich tied the game with an RBI single before Anthony Rivera produced the game-winner, stroking a two-run single.

Shaw took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a solo home run by Dalton Davidson, who was 4-for-4.

Jared Carmardelle picked up the win, allowing a run on six hits over six innings with two walks and three strikeouts.

Wes Perque took the loss for the Eagles, going the distance, allowing three unearned runs on five hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts.

Thomas Jefferson (2-16) host Bonnabel on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Shaw (12-15) will host St. Augustine at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
