Baseball: Country Day, Lutcher, St. Paul’s, Kennedy earn wins Wednesday

Area Prep Baseball Report for Thursday, March 28

In baseball action Wednesday, Country Day staged a dramatic rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge the Willow School 7-6 at Pontiff Playground.

The Cajuns led 4-1 after four innings before the Lions erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 6-4 lead.

In the seventh, Maddox Moss started the rally when he was hit by a pitch and Justin Drago singled. Sinnott Bland walked to load the bases. After Owen Marchal lined out, Cam Rizzi singled home a run to cut the deficit to 6-5.

That set the stage for eighth-grader Logan Nelson, who worked a full count and delivered a game-winning, two-run single.

Drago had three hits and an RBI, Nelson finished with two hits, two walks and two RBI and Bland added a hit for the Cajuns.

Country Day (7-8) plays rival St. Martin’s Episcopal tonight at 7 p.m. at Mike Miley Stadium.

The Willow School (12-6) saw its nine-game win streak come to an end. The Lions face McMain tonight at 7 p.m. in a District 9-4A contest.

Lutcher rolled over Kenner Discovery 10-0 at home in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

The Bulldogs scored in every inning, taking a 3-0 lead after one inning and scoring single runs in the second and third to make it 5-0. Lutcher put up four runs in the fourth inning and walked it off with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Luke Babin pitched a one-hitter, with no walks and 11 strikeouts and one hit batter in a masterful performance. Babin helped his own cause with a double and three RBI while Caleb Hastings had two hits, including a triple. Chad Carter was 2-for-2 with two RBI.

Camden Miller had the only hit for the Swamp Owls. Madden Williams took the loss.

Lutcher (17-4) won its third straight game. The Bulldogs play at Hahnville today at 4 p.m.

Kenner Discovery (9-13) squares off with Riverdale today at 4 p.m. at Mike Miley Stadium in a District 9-4A game.

St. Paul’s defeated Hammond 8-3 at Hammond in District 6-5A play.

The Wolves scored a run in the top of the second inning and added two runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Tornadoes cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the third but St. Paul’s scored twice in the top of the fourth to lead 5-1. Hammond answered with single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to make it 5-3 before the Wolves put it away with three runs in the sixth inning.

Air Force signee Cooper Winchester had two hits and two RBI, Cody Corales had three hits, Brennan Villa had a hit and two RBI and walked twice and Jude Roberts had two hits and an RBI. Marcus Newfield and Brody Bouterie each had a hit and an RBI. Bouterie picked up the win.

Justin Harland had a hit and an RBI while Kaleb O’Hara drove in a run for the Tornadoes. Jace Caves took the loss for Hammond.

Both teams return to district play today.

St. Paul’s (12-8, 2-0) hosts Covington at 6:30 p.m. at Heap Field.

Hammond (6-12, 0-2) hosts Slidell at 6:30 p.m.

John F. Kennedy whipped Sophie B. Wright 13-3 in its district 9-3A opener Wednesday in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule. It was the fourth straight win for the Cougars.

The Cougars scored two runs in the top of the first, added a run in the second and put up three runs in the top of the third to take a 6-0 lead. It was 7-3 after four innings when John F. Kennedy ended it with six runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Amyne Darensbourg homered while Nahun Lalin had three hits, including a triple and an RBI. Kennedy Tyler added a hit and an RBI. Lalin picked up the win, allowing two runs on one hit. Lalin walked six and struck out seven.

John F. Kennedy (5-7-1, 1-0) will play at Bonnabel Friday at 4 p.m. in a non-district contest.

The Warriors (0-9, 0-1) play at Ellender today at 4 p.m. in a non-district game.
