Lance Legendre

Recruits are attracted to schools because of team success, familiarity with the staff, opportunity to play early and many more factors.

Former Warren Easton head football coach Tony Hull has done a remarkable job recruiting the Greater New Orleans Metro area since he landed at Kansas as an assistant coach a couple of seasons ago. No less than eight metro area prospects dot the Jayhawks roster. Most, if not all, are there due to Hull’s influential relationship.

Dual threat quarterback Lance LeGendre from Warren Easton has committed to Kansas with offers from Alabama, Missouri, Tulane, Houston, ULL, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Oregon State, Memphis, Virginia, Va. Tech and Kentucky on the table. One must assume Hull has done great work on the trail to attract the 4 star talent’s pledge.

Nicknamed “12 Gauge,” the 6-foot-2, 212 pound LeGendre threw for over 2,000 yards with 23 touchdowns and ran for another 500 yards and 10 scores last season.

Other quality players Hull has enticed to commit did not make it to Lawrence as signees but several good ones are now in the fold.

Landry-Walker’s Mike Lee is a two-year starting defensive back there while wideout Takulve Williams out of St. Augustine was a 2017 signee.

The 2017 Louisiana Player of the Year Anthony “Pooka” Williams was a 2018 addition along with Landry- Walker CB Corione Harris.

Ehret receiver Travis Jordan and a pair of Warren Easton alums – offensive tackle Malik Clark and quarterback Tyriek Starks – were 2016 signees. Patterson wide out Daylon Charlot (and Alabama transfer from the 2015 class) is also at KU. Not a bad haul.

Area prospects seeking new scenery outside of the state when it comes to continuing their college football careers is not an uncommon occurrence. Tennessee, Colorado and Miami all made a living on southeast Louisiana soil in the late ’80’s and early ’90’s. Not long after that period, Texas A&M, Alabama and TCU all followed suit by taking big bites out of the recruiting landscape.

It now appears that the Kansas Jayhawks have become the trendy new option for local prospects. Hull’s efforts, along with head coach Dave Beaty, have nibbled away enough to leave a dent in recruiting locally that resembles coastal erosion.

Kansas plays in the prestigious Big 12 conference, on the plus side but the downside is considerable for the football program. Since Beaty assumed the resigns in 2014, his overall record is 6-44.

The recruiting success may continue for the Jayhawks, but if things don’t turn around quickly, the local recruits will be playing for the next head coach.
