Video: Three Rummel baseball players make college choices

METAIRIE – Mikey Ryan fulfilled a childhood dream Wednesday.

The Archbishop Rummel senior infielder signed a national letter-of-intent with defending national champion LSU, one of three Raiders to lock in their college decisions as part of an on-campus signing ceremony.

Two pitchers also signed scholarship papers Wednesday: Ace Giancarlo Arencibia with Tulane and Coleman Capaci with Jones (Miss.) College.

Ryan hit .411 with seven home runs and 18 stolen bases as a junior in earning all-district, all-metro and all-state honors. He committed to LSU during his sophomore year and maintained that commitment throughout the recruiting process.

Arencibia, who like Ryan committed early in his prep career, went 7-1 with a 1.90 ERA for the Raiders as a junior, including a pair of no-hitters in the postseason that earned him Allstate Sugar Bowl Amateur Athlete of the Month for April 2023. He struck out 83 in 59 2/3 innings.

Capaci went 2-2 and struck out 21 in 14 2/3 innings, primarily in relief. He will take the two-year route in hopes of signing with a Division I program down the road.

Rummel won seven consecutive postseason game to reach the Division I select state championship game last spring. The Raiders, despite being the No. 13 seed, knocked off three of the top five seeds in the bracket before a 1-0 defeat to District 9-5A rival Jesuit in the final.
