Video: Rummel, Brother Martin score big wins in boys bowling crossover matches

KENNER – Before Brother Martin became the dominant program in boys high school bowling for the better part of the last decade, Archbishop Rummel won back-to-back state championships in 2012 and 2013.

In crossover matches Monday against Baton Rouge region schools at Bowlero Kenner broadcast live on Crescent City Sports, both came away with big victories.

The Raiders had perhaps the day’s most impressive performance in a 20½-6½ victory over East Ascension to snap the Spartans’ 17-match regular season winning streak.

Rummel (6-0), second in the latest unofficial LHSAA bowling power rankings, fired a 3,668 team series, the highest of the season in the state.

The Raiders claimed 7½ of the eight points in the first game to take command. East Ascension rallied within 10½-5½ going into the final game, but Rummel delivered a 1,291 third game to win seven points and close out the match.

Freshman Anthony Linker led Rummel with a 668 series on games of 226-236-206. Blake Caire had a 621 series, Jacob Beatty a 620 and Justin Smith a 613 as the Raiders won seven and tied one of the nine matches on the right pair.

Eliot Douenias led East Ascension (5-1) with a 614 series and Luke Chapman had a 601. The Spartans started the day eighth in the power rankings.

Brother Martin 18, Dutchtown 9: The Crusaders rolled a 3,667 series, just one pin behind Rummel’s total, in its victory over the Griffins.

Blake Hebert had a career-high 748 series to lead Brother Martin (4-1), 14th in the power rankings as of Monday.

He opened with a 191 at No. 3, then changed lanes when he moved into the No. 4 slot for game two. Hebert opened the second game with nine straight strikes before leaving a 4-pin on the first shot in the 10th frame and finishing with a 278. He backed that up in the final game with a 279.

Jacob Vangilder had a middle-game 247 and a 662 series for Brother Martin.

Preston West, making his season debut for the Griffins (2-2), had a team-best 729 series, including games of 259 and 257. Braiden Torres had a 649 set, including a 235 final game.

Rummel and Brother Martin face off Thursday in Kenner, one of two big matchups on the schedule. Holy Cross faces Jesuit i.

Catholic High 16, Holy Cross 11: The Bears got off to a fast start and held off the previously unbeaten Tigers as part of the crossover matches at Bowlero.

Catholic (4-2) turned in an 1,166 opening game in jumping to a 7-1 lead. Holy Cross (5-1) pulled within 9-7 after two behind Colin Clark’s 215 game.

The Tigers, led by Clark’s 222, won four of six individual matches in the final game, but Catholic maintained its total-pin edge thanks to Evan Guilbeau’s 257 and Colton Karisny’s 225 game.

Anchor Mashon Carter led the Bears with a 622 series. Alec Lanning had a team-high 544 series to lead Holy Cross, which entered Monday at No. 3 in the power rankings.

Archbishop Shaw 22½, St. Michael 4½: The Eagles swept the opening game and rolled to a crossover victory at Bowlero.

Jonathan Arena’s 259 and Brady Barrilleaux’s 244 paced Shaw () in the opening game. Joshua Collins had a final-game 244 as the nine bowlers on the Eagles roster each bowled two games.

Matt Bonnecaze’s final-game 209 was the best of the day for St. Michael (5-2).

The Eagles were the top-ranked team in the Division II power rankings entering the week, while St. Michael was ninth.

Patrick Taylor 22, Belle Chasse 5: In a matchup of Division II unbeatens, the Tigers defeated the Cardinals at Westside Lanes in Harvey.

Patrick Taylor (6-0), currently second to Shaw in the unofficial Division II LHSAA power rankings, raced to a 7-1 lead after one game and led 13-3 after two.

Jadon Lieu had games of 212 and 216 as part of a 626 series to lead the Tigers, while Beckham Lieu opened with a 233 and finished with a 599 set.

Matthew St. Germain had a 231 middle game and 611 series to lead Belle Chasse (3-1).

John Curtis Christian 18½, Hahnville 8½: The Patriots pulled away late against the Tigers at Colonial Lanes in Harahan.

Carter Santangelo had a 544 series and Ryder Kauffman a 522 set to lead Curtis (4-2).

Bryce Goodson’s middle-game 158 and Kayla Dupre’s final-game 146 were the best of the day for Hahnville (3-4).

Denham Springs 18, Destrehan 9: The Wildcats jumped to a first-game lead before the Yellow Jackets rallied as part of the crossover matches at Bowlero.

Beau Senior’s opening-game 209 helped Destrehan (2-4) take a 5-3 lead, but Denham Springs (4-1) rallied to sweep game two and take control. Cooper Bush’s 190 and Grant Pendergraft’s 186 in the final game helped the Jackets close it out.

Senior had a 538 series to lead Destrehan.

St. Martin’s 24, Fisher 3: The Saints defeated the Gators at Westside.

St. Martin’s (5-2), which entered the week 13th in the Division II power rankings, got a 191 final game and 475 series from Branden Saucier.

Chad Dubea’s 154 middle game was the best of the day for Fisher (0-6).

St. Amant 26, John Ehret 1: The Gators swept the first two games against the Patriots as part of the crossover matches at Bowlero.

Austen Kirby had a 201 opening game and a 565 series to lead St. Amant (4-2).

Ean Johnson’s 500 series paced Ehret (1-4).

Central 23, St. Augustine 4: The Wildcats defeated the Purple Knights as part of the crossover matches.

Jette Sagaley led Central (3-2) with a 554 series.

Will Sam’s 164 middle game and 418 series were the best of the day for St. Augustine (0-7).

Slidell 23, Ponchatoula 4: The Tigers were dominant in a Hammond region match at Tangi Lanes.

Lillian Simpson had an opening-game 259 and a 672 series to lead Slidell (3-2). Hunter Mullen had a 653 series for the winners.

CJ Hardy’s 212 final game and 574 series led Ponchatoula (1-5).

Loranger 23, Pope John Paul II 4: The Jaguars fell in a Hammond region match at Tangi.

Jonathan Lala’a 560 series led Pope John Paul (3-4).

Tanner Reid had a 608 series and Hunter Simon had an even 600 to pace Loranger (2-3).
