Softball: Chapelle, Slidell open seasons with wins

Area Prep Softball Report for Friday, Feb. 16

Coming off an outstanding season in which they reached the Select Division I semifinals, Archbishop Chapelle is ready to make another deep run in the playoffs in 2024.

The Chipmunks return a host of key starters from last season and got off to a good start Thursday, whipping Belle Chasse 12-0 at Belle Chasse.

Kayla Giardina picked up where she left off last year, pitching a complete game no-hitter, striking out 19 while walking two, using 93 pitches, 69 of which were strikes.

Katie Deslatte was the hitting star, producing three hits, including a pair of home runs and driving in five runs. Allie Domangue had three hits and an RBI while Mia Impastato had two hits and two RBI and Delaney Trosclair added two hits and an RBI. Kelsie Schimdt had two hits and a run scored.

A Thoman took the loss for the Cardinals, going six innings.

Chapelle returns to action next Tuesday at Patrick Taylor.

Belle Chasse is back in action today, hosting Destrehan at 3 p.m.

Slidell opened its season with a 6-3 victory at Pearl River.

The game was tied 1-1 after two innings when the Tigers scored a run in the top of the third to make it 2-1 and put up three runs in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. The Rebels cut the deficit to 5-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth before Slidell added a run in the top of the seventh inning.

Camille Boudreaux had three hits, including a pair of doubles and two RBI to pace a 10-hit attack for Slidell. Logan Echols had two hits, including a double with an RBI and Izzy Powell added two hits.

Bree McCleary went the distance to get the win, allowing two earned runs, scattering nine hits. McCleary overcame eight walks with 13 strikeouts.

Slidell returns to action Saturday, hosting Lakeshore at noon.

The Rebels travel to play St. Mary’s Academy next Tuesday.
