METAIRIE – Facing good competition makes you better and tougher.

Archbishop Shaw had taken on a very challenging schedule and competed well, despite having a losing record heading into Tuesday afternoon’s game with St. Martin’s Episcopal at Mike Miley Stadium.

Locked in a tight game, the Eagles broke it open with six runs in the top of the seventh inning in an 11-4 victory.

Dalton Davidson had four hits, including two doubles, the latter which cleared the bases in the big seventh inning uprising. Chase Baiamonte also had four hits and drove in a run as part of a 15-hit attack for Shaw (5-9).

After two scoreless innings, both teams broke through in the third inning. The Eagles scored four in the top of the third as Davidson doubled, Austin Amadeo reached on an error and Cameron Marigny-Bolden walked to load the bases.

Blair Mills cleared the bases with a double to make it 3-0 before Baiamonte singled home Mills to make it 4-0.

The Saints responded with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Sage Falterman singled before Daniel Fink, David Helwig and Cooper Wakefield all walked, the latter plating a run. Alex Scheuermann drove in a run on a fielder’s choice groundout and Gabe Saverese doubled home Helwig to make it 4-3.

Shaw increased the lead to 5-3 in the top of the fifth as Mills was hit by a pitch, Biamonte singled and Nathan Billiot singled home a run.

St. Martin’s (3-3) pulled with a run at 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth on a double by Savarese and an RBI double by Daniel Duplantis.

The Eagles put it away with the six-run seventh. Hayden Percle and Baiamonte singled and Billiot was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Dylan Reed drew a walk, scoring Percle to make it 6-4. Davidson followed by a base-clearing double to break it open at 9-4. Austin Amadeo and Marigny-Bolden each added an RBI double.

Both teams return to action in the Shaw Tournament on Thursday.
