Notre Dame pulls away late to beat St. Charles Catholic for Division III state baseball title

Top seed Notre Dame broke open a close game late Friday evening to down No. 2 St. Charles Catholic in the Division III state championship game at McMurry Park in Sulphur.

Tied 2-2 into the fifth inning, the Pios scored twice in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good.

Parker Seilhan singled, Ethan Menard walked and Karson Broussard singled to load the bases. After a force play at the plate for the first out, Caleb Comeaux singled home what proved to be the game winning run to make it 3-2. Broussard then scored on a wild pitch and it was 4-2.

Notre Dame put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs.

Dom Thibodaux walked, Seilhan singled and Menard walked to lead the bases. Luke Hoffpauir delivered the big blow with a base-clearing double to right field, giving the Pios a comfortable five-run lead.

Notre Dame (27-7) took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Broussard singled, Hoffpauir walked and Comeaux singled to load the bases. Alex Stevens produced the first run with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 before William Vice singled to lead the bases again. Dom Thibodaux was hit by a pitch to plate the second run.

St. Charles Catholic (23-10-1) tied it in the top of the third inning.

Ayden Authement singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Cade Pregeant singled with Authement going to third and Pregeant advancing to second on the throw toward third. Authement scored on an error to make it 2-1 before Anthony Fernandez singled home the tying run.

Vice picked up the win, going 6 2/3 innings, using 108 pitches. Vice allowed two runs on six hits, walking two while striking out four. Sebastian Roche came on and got the final out.

Hoffpauir led the Notre Dame attack with two hits and three RBI while Seilhan and Broussard each had a pair of hits.

Bryce Bertucci started and went 1 1/3 innings for the Comets, allowing two runs on three hits. Pregeant came on, going 2 2/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits, taking the loss. Brandon Kragle went 1 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on three hits before Ryan Laiche pitched the final 2/3 innings.

Pregeant had two of the six hits for St. Charles Catholic.

The loss snapped a 13-game win streak for St. Charles Catholic, who won the Division II state championship in 2019.

The Division III state title is the second in three seasons for the Pios and the fourth overall in Notre Dame history.
