LHSAA Boys Prep Basketball Report for Tuesday, March 5

Newman has fought through a tumultuous season which, at one point, had seen itself eliminated from competing for state championship honors.

A successful appeal allowed the Greenies to march forward in quest of a third straight state championship.

That quest resumes today at Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles when the top-seeded Greenies (19-10) battle No. 13 Episcopal (22-15) at 2:45 p.m. in the Select Division III semifinals.

Junior Christopher Cenac leads a balanced attack for Newman, averaging 13.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game while senior Todd Jones averages 13 points and 8.3 rebounds. Sophomore Randy Livingston Jr. averages 9.2 points and 4.1 assists per contest.

Newman is playing its best basketball, having won 10 straight games.

The winner will play No. 3 University Lab, who edged No. 2 Dunham 44-41 Monday.

The game was close throughout, with Dunham takin a 14-13 lead after one quarter before the Cubs grabbed a 28-22 halftime lead. It was 37-30 U-High heading to the fourth quarter.

Trushaad Bush led the Cubs (24-7) with 15 points while Elijah Haven led the Tigers (27-8) with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
