You may not hear much about Morris Jeff Community School in athletics.

The New Orleans institution has done an excellent job since opening in 2010.

Now, the Pelicans are achieving in athletics.

In just its sixth year of competing in LHSAA athletics, the Morris Jeff boys are in the LHSAA state soccer quarterfinals for a second time.

No. 22 Morris Jeff upset No. 6 St. Michael 3-2 at Lafreniere Park late Tuesday.

The match was tied at the end of regulation and at the end of the first overtime period.

As the second overtime period was about to end, the Pelicans earned a corner kick and sophomore Kris Avila turned it into the game winner, heading it into the net to provide a dramatic victory.

Morris Jeff (9-6-2) will travel to face No. 3 University Lab (#3) in the quarterfinals this weekend in a match in Baton Rouge. The Cubs defeated No. 19 Kenner Discovery in the regional round.
