FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls State University graduate transfer guard Jeremiah Jefferson has been named All-Southland honorable mention, as the league office announced Monday its 2018-19 men’s basketball awards.

A native of Dallas, Jefferson led Nicholls in scoring in his lone season for the Red and Gray, ranking fifth in the Southland with 17.3 points per game. Jefferson scored at least 20 points in 13 games, including the final five contests of the season. He had a season-high 31 in a win over Mobile.

Jefferson posted the best single season of any Colonel all-time behind the 3-point line, setting a new record with 98 made. He ranked 33rd in the NCAA in makes and was third in the Southland in percentage at 39.2 percent. His best performance from behind the arc was a 7-for-12 night at Louisville, which was his second game as a Colonel.

For the league’s major awards, regular season champion Sam Houston State took home two of the top honors with Cameron Delaney earning Player of the Year, and Kai Mitchell earned Newcomer of the Year. The other winners included Northwestern State forward/center Ishmael Lane (Defensive Player of the Year), New Orleans forward Gerrale Gates (Freshman of the Year), and Abilene Christian’s Joe Golding was recognized as the league’s top head coach.

All-conference teams and individual awards are nominated and voted upon by the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors. Voting for oneself or one’s own players/coaches is not permitted. To receive honorable mention, a player must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
