Southeastern set to open Spring Practice
HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana football team will open spring practice on Tuesday afternoon at Strawberry Stadium.
Over the next five weeks, the Lions will practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:50 p.m., as well as on Saturdays at 9:50 a.m. SLU Pro Day is scheduled for March 21 at 8 a.m., while spring drills culminate with the annual Spring Game on April 13 at 2 p.m.
Southeastern head coach Frank Scelfo is more comfortable heading into his second spring with the Lions. Last March, Scelfo and his mostly new staff entered spring drills less than six weeks after coming to Hammond.
“I have a good handle on our team and expect our players and staff being able to come together much quicker,” Scelfo commented. “We’ll be able to hit the ground running this spring, because the players understand my expectations and I have a knowledge of their abilities. Last spring was so much about evaluating personnel and our staff familiarizing themselves with our players.”
While the Lions won’t be able to get into the full physicality of the game until putting pads on for the first time on Saturday, Scelfo stressed the importance of the opening week of spring ball.
“These first couple of days are about establishing the tempo we expect to practice at every day,” Scelfo said. “We have a lot of guys back who are familiar with our system and we’ve been meeting, so we shouldn’t be thinking so much about what we’re supposed to be doing or where we’re supposed to be. We should be flying around and moving fast from day one.”
The Lions’ full roster will not be on the field in March and April, as SLU has 22 additions that are current high school seniors and will be joining the squad in August. However, Scelfo has goals for his returning veterans and transfer additions to accomplish over the next five weeks.
“We want to provide a clear vision for our team over these 15 practices of not only how we’re practicing, but practicing with a purpose and understanding of what we want to accomplish,” Scelfo said. “We also want to develop depth and create competition at different position groups. If we walk off the field after the Spring Game on April 13 and we’ve done those things, I’ll feel like we’ve had a successful spring.”
Scelfo and his staff will be evaluating every position, but will have a more watchful eye on the trenches.
“We have to do a better job of running the football and stopping the run and that starts with our offensive and defensive lines,” Scelfo said. “We’ll be more physical and fundamentally sound on the offensive side and more fundamentally sound and play with a more aggressive nature on the defensive side. The way our offensive and defensive fronts develop over these 15 practices will go a long way towards telling us how successful of a spring we’ll have.”
The Lions open the 2019 season on Aug. 31, hosting Jacksonville State at 7 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.
