Holy Cross-Neville soccer

Following a surprising quarterfinal exit in last year’s boys soccer playoffs, Holy Tigers have found their way back to the state championship stage.

In frigid weather, the top-seeded Tigers prevailed over the fifth-seeded Neville Tigers, 1-0, in a long-winded defensive masterclass.

The victory propelled Holy Cross to an all-New Orleans final in LHSAA Division II on Friday against No. 3 Ben Franklin.

Holy Cross excelled at keeping the ball in the opponent’s territory but Neville keeper Gael Acosta was up to the task, blocking six shots on goal. However, one shot from Erik Santamaria slipped through at the 7:36 mark of the first half, and the host Tigers made the goal stand up.

Coming out of halftime up 1-0, Holy Cross continued to attack but ultimately just ran the clock down until the end of regulation.

Holy Cross head coach Matt Millet shared his thoughts on the game.

The Tigers (19-4-4) advance to the championship match against Ben Franklin Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Strawberry Stadium. Holy Cross is looking for its fifth state title, having won four straight from 2018-21. Holy Cross downed Ben Franklin 2-0 on Jan. 23.
