BOUTTE – Needing a win to stay squarely in the Crescent City Sports Prep Summer League playoff race, Hahnville started slowly but finished fast and accomplished the feat.

The Tigers overcame an early deficit with a three-run fourth inning in a 6-2 win at home over Lakeshore-based Mortgage Gumbo Monday.

Mortgage Gumbo took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a walk to Braden Braud, who stole second and scored on an RBI single by Dom Letort and it was 1-0. A second run scored on an error to make it 2-0.

Hahnville got on the board in the bottom of the third as Chase Morales and Truman Moyer and an RBI single by Kason Alexander to make it 2-1.

The Tigers took the lead with three runs in the fourth on singles by Donovan Friloux and Jake Risinger. Sam Simoneaux then bunted for a hit and a throwing error scored Friloux and Risinger to make it 3-2. Moyer then drove in a run on a fielder’s choice grounder to make it 4-2.

Hahnville (7-3-1) finished off the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning on a walk to Simoneaux, a sacrifice bunt by Morales, an intentional walk to Aidan Machado, another sacrifice bunt by Moyer, another intentional walk to Alexander and a two-run single by Beau Parker to make it 6-2.

Albert Lui started and picked up the win for Hahnville, going four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits. Lui walked two and struck out five. Risinger was superb in relief, pitching three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Risinger walked two, hit a batter and struck out five to pick up the save.

Jack Hurley started and took the loss for Mortgage Gumbo (5-6), going four innings, allowing four runs on five hits. Hurley walked three, hit three batters and struck out three. Gavin Stein relieved and went two innings, allowing two runs on just one hit. Gabe Dalton had a pair of singles for the Titans.

Jared Vial took over the Hahnville program just when the CCSL began and he is adjusting well to his players and his players are adjusting to him.

“Coming in and just figuring out what you have as far as pitching, defense and everything else and getting everything together, we’ve competed,” Vial said. “There’s a competitive aspect to it that has definitely shown the first couple of weeks that I’ve been with the program. It’s good to see. Risinger is a bulldog.”

Hahnville turned three double plays to greatly aid its fine pitching performance.

“My thought process in this is that yes, it’s summer and it’s hot but this is a fresh start with a new coach, new expectations,” Vial said. “They’ve kind of grabbed that and run with it.”
