Girls Basketball Playoffs: Mandeville, Amite, SSA, John Curtis, Sacred Heart, BTW, STA advance with wins Monday

Girls Prep Basketball Report for Tuesday, Feb. 20

It was a tough day for area teams Monday as many were eliminated in the regional round of the LHSAA girls prep basketball playoffs.

That was not the case for Mandeville.

The third-seeded Skippers advanced to the Non-Select Division I quarterfinals Monday with a 51-39 win over No. 19 East Ascension.

Mandeville led 9-3 after one quarter and it was 26-13 at halftime. It was 34-22 heading to the final quarter.

Alanna Benoit topped the Skippers with 19 points while Giulia Balbo added 10 points.

Brielle Betts led the Spartans with 13 points while Aaiyah Weems scored 10 points.

Mandeville (27-5) has won 14 straight games and will host No. 6 Zachary in the quarterfinals. The Broncos dismissed No. 11 Ponchatoula 59-47.

Mandeville defeated Zachary 64-48 in the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic Jan. 5.

In the Non-Select Division III bracket, perennial power and No. 2 seed Amite whipped No. 18 Marksville 72-26.

The Warriors (27-5) advance to host No. 10 Mansfield in the quarterfinals. Mansfield upset No. 7 Pine 46-35.

It has been an outstanding season for St. Scholastica and that outstanding play continues.

After winning a district title for the first time since 1988, SSA now has a playoff win for the first time in five years.

The No. 4 seeded Doves handled No. 21 St. Joseph’s Academy 50-31 at home in the regional round of the Select Division I playoffs.

St. Scholastica took control early, taking a 13-7 lead after one quarter and a 27-11 halftime advantage. It was 37-16 heading to the final quarter.

Addison Pontiff led the Doves with 18 points, Emilee Duet scored 11 points and Victoria Darrah had nine points.

Kendall Dailey scored 10 points while Annabelle Sutton finished with seven points for the Redstickers.

St. Scholastica (23-5) advances to the quarterfinals to host No. 5 Woodlawn of Baton Rouge at 6 p.m. Thursday. Woodlawn downed No. 12 Northwood 71-38.

Also in Select Division I, traditional power John Curtis Christian easily defeated No. 18 Southwood 66-20 in River Ridge.

The Patriots (19-4) advance to the quarterfinals to host No. 10 Lafayette. The Lions came to Metairie and upset No. 7 Archbishop Chapelle 38-26.

In Select Division II, No. 6 Booker T. Washington of New Orleans advanced with a 64-58 win at home over No. 11 Archbishop Hannan 58.

The Lions (19-8) advance to play at No. 3 Madison Prep in the quarterfinals. The Chargers downed No. 19 St. Michael 59-38.

In Select Division III, No. 5 seed Academy of the Sacred Heart 46 of New Orleans downed No. 12 Northlake Christian 46-35 at home.

The Cardinals jumped all over the Wolverines immediately, sprinting to a 15-2 lead after one quarter. It was 20-14 at halftime. Northlake Christian cut the deficit to 30-28 heading to the fourth quarter.

After the Wolverines tied the game 30-30 early in the fourth quarter, Sacred Heart then turned it on, outscoring Northlake Christian 16-5 the rest of the way for the win.

Leah Varisco led the Cardinals with 18 points while Libby Fitzpatrick scored 11 points.

Naomi Berry led the Wolverines (13-13) with 14 points while Gianna Erickson finished with nine points.

Sacred Heart (14-7) advances to face No. 4 University Lab Thursday at 5 p.m. in Baton Rouge. The Cubs whipped No. 13 Pope John Paul II 61-38.

Also in Select Division III, No. 9 St. Thomas Aquinas came to New Orleans and downed No. 8 Newman 43-27.

The Falcons (13-13) advance to take on No. 1 seed Dunham in the quarterfinals Thursday at 6 p.m. in Baton Rouge. The Tigers handled No. 16 Acadiana Renaissance Charter 52-18.
