Willie Fritz continues to have his Tulane team spend a significant amount of time on the kicking game as the Green Wave went through practice again Friday morning, including work with their hands team and punt blocking. The Tulane head coach said his team did a lot of running as well.

There will be no week one game after significant effort was made to fill that date. As a result, Tulane is scheduled to play an 11-game season.

“I think we’re on the path to where we want to be, especially right now,” Fritz said. “I’ve just got to be careful about overworking the guys. We took two full days off. Not very often during camp do you get two full days off. That was good. I think the guys are getting healed up.”

Fritz expressed satisfaction with the progress at cornerback.

“We’ve got a lot of guys competing to play back there,” Fritz said. “We’re going to roll some guys back there. Jaylon Monroe has had an outstanding camp. Willie Langham, Kyle Meyers gets better every day. Those three will play corner. There’s a freshman, Kevaris Hall who’s had an outstanding camp. He’s going to be able to play as a true freshman for us. Kiland Harrison has had a good camp.”

Fritz said the safety position appears well stocked as well and he really likes his youngest players.

“We’re excited about where we’re at with our freshman class,” Fritz said. “Hopefully, knock on wood, we get a season where we try to play everybody, if at all possible.”

With students back on campus, that means more precautions must be taken for the football players who interact with all others.

“This is a new normal now,” Fritz said. “We’ve got to be diligent in our attention to detail on the COVID rules. I think our campus is doing a dynamite job. I’ve walked campus a little bit. Everybody’s got on a mask. They are doing a good job with classrooms, with social distancing.

One guy can screw it up, one lady. We’ve got to look out for our fellow man and fellow woman and do this. It’s got to be a daily basis. You can’t relax. If you want to play ball, it’s what we’ve got to do.”

Tulane will practice again Saturday morning.
