Mario Williams

Tulane head football coach Jon Sumrall has had a banner day in his new job by utilizing the transfer portal.

After having three top receivers – Jha’Quan Jackson, Lawrence Keys and transfer Chris Brazzell – depart this offseason, Tulane added Shazz Preston from Alabama earlier Monday and Mario Williams from USC soon after.

The 5-9, 175-pound Williams was the fourth overall ranked wide receiver in the ’21 class out of Tampa, Fla. and signed with Oklahoma for one season. He then headed to USC along with quarterback Caleb Williams for their sophomore campaigns.

Williams has tallied 104 catches for 1,316 yards and 11 touchdowns during his three-year college football career. He snared 23 passes this past season for 305 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Williams was eligible for the 2024 NFL Draft and came back with his draft grade slotting him in the third to fourth round range.

Ideal in the slot and possessing great acceleration, Williams shows elite burst off the line. He is a glider with sharp-cutting routes and adjusts to underthrown passes well. His high football IQ allows him to identify seams in the secondary. Williams specializes in out-routes and makes the over-the-shoulder catches down the field.

More quick than fast with a 4.55 40-yard dash time, Williams should make an immediate impact with the Green Wave.
