Former Tulane running back, Jesuit assistant Gene Tarzetti dead at age 88

Gene TarzettiFormer Jesuit coach and Tulane player Gene Tarzetti passed away Wednesday at his home in Tickfaw at the age of 88.

A Gulfport, Miss. native, Tarzetti attended Pass Christian High School before he served in the United States Navy and attended Tulane on a football scholarship. Tarzetti played two seasons for the Green Wave, appearing in 20 games at running back.

At Tulane, Tarzetti was the Student-Athlete of the Year in 1958 after posting the highest GPA among student-athletes. Tarzetti also achieved a Masters degree from Southeastern Louisiana.

Tarzetti went on to coach at Jesuit for 12 years, including eight under his brother Ken, who was the head coach from 1958-1965.

The Blue Jays captured the Class 3A state championship in 1960, edging Istrouma 21-20 behind quarterback Pat Screen. Jesuit won three straight district championships during that period and Jesuit also reached the state title game in 1963.

There will be no formal service due the COVID-19 pandemic. A private burial will be held in Delisle (MS), where Tarzetti was raised.
