Up until April 10, Jake Cabeceiras had not pitched for Archbishop Rummel.

Now, Cabeceiras had made three appearances.

His third start was one he will remember for a long time.

Cabeceiras hurled a no-hitter as Archbishop Rummel concluded District 9-5A play with a 10-0 victory over St. Augustine in a game shortened to 4 ½ innings by the mercy rule.

Cabeceiras, who will be heading to the University of New Orleans in the fall, walked three and struck out seven, using 79 pitches.

“I can’t take all the credit, my team played well today,” Cabeceiras said. “We all hit the ball well. Ryan Smilari, Kyle Walker, they had big days today. I just know when I pitch, I trust my defense behind me to play. I found my breaking ball early and I decided to go with it all day. We went through a little slump, a losing streak. I’m a competitor and I want to win. I just decided that I told coach that I would pitch if he needed me.”

Archbishop Rummel jumped on top with three runs in the bottom of the first.

Walker, a Louisiana Tech signee, doubled down the right field line and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Lance Johnson, who reached on a throwing error. Smilari singled home Walker before Logan Bertucci and Tyler Cook each drove in a run with groundouts.

The Raiders broke it open with six runs in the bottom of the second.

Ethan Klapatch doubled, Kyle Walker singled and Lance Johnson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ryan Smilari singled home a pair of runs to make it 5-0. Logan Bertucci followed with an RBI single to make it 6-0 before Cook drove in a run with a ground ball, another run scored on an error and Aidan Champagne drove in a run with a groundout and it was 9-0.

Rummel scored its final run in the bottom of the fourth as Bertucci reaches on an error, Tyler Cook singled and Champagne singled home a run.

Smilari was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Walker was 3-for 4 with a double and two runs scored to pace a 10-hit attack for Rummel.

“Jake came out and threw the ball very well and the guys had a little energy and they weren’t fooling around,” Rummel coach Frank Cazeaux said. “The weather was iffy. I’m very proud of their effort. We swung the bats, put a little pressure on them on defense and I’ll tell you one thing. The St. Aug Purple Knights are a good baseball team. We were very selective with our pitches. Tommorow is Senior Day and we’re looking forward to it.”

Jeffrey Duroncelay took the loss for St. Augustine, going the distance.

The Raiders (17-10, 5-7) will conclude their regular season against Newman Saturday at 4 p.m. at Raider Park in a game that you can listen to on 106.1 FM NASH ICON.

The Purple Knights (14-15, 2-9) still have a game with Archbishop Shaw to conclude district play.
