Basketball: Sophie B. Wright, Ehret, Newman, Rummel take tournament wins Wednesday

Area Prep Basketball Report for Thursday, Dec. 29

In the Grace King Tournament, Sophie B. Wright downed Chalmette 47-35 for its fourth straight win.

The Warriors led 11-8 after one quarter and maintained a slim 23-22 lead at halftime. Sophie B. Wright controlled play in the second half, outscoring the Owls 11-6 in the third quarter to take a 34-28 lead before pulling away in the fourth quarter.

Davonte Landry led the Warriors (12-2) with 11 points while Lebron Leal had nine points.

Bryan Major scored 14 points for the Owls (6-10) while Jaden Celestine added 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Sophie B. Wright advances to the semifinals Thursday to face Martin Luther King Charter, who edged Douglass 57-54.

The other semifinal will pit John Ehret against New Orleans Science & Math. The Patriots downed Riverdale 78-62 while the Nautilus downed host Grace King 67-63.

For John Ehret (10-2), Montel Robinson starred with 28 points, John Kelly had 19 points and Josh Grabert finishd with 11 points.

Newman advanced to the semifinals of the Sunkist Shootout in Lafayette with a convincing 72-47 victory over Teurlings Catholic.

The Greenies controlled play throughout, taking a 19-11 lead after one quarter and Newman opened up a 39-24 halftime lead. It was 53-34 going to the final quarter.

Newman hammered Teurlings Catholic by a 40-23 margin on the boards.

Canin Jefferson led a balanced Newman attack with 20 points, six assists and four rebounds while Chris Lockett scored 15 points and had nine rebounds and four assists. Todd Jones added 15 points and eight rebounds.

Bradford Cain led the Rebels with 21 points and four assists while Travis Gallien and Logan Myers each scored 12 points.

Newman advances to the semifinals tonight at 7:15 p.m. against Bishop Ireton of Virginia, who defeated Southside 53-42.

At the Pirates of the Caribbean Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida, Archbishop Rummel advanced to the title game with a 50-35 win over Scarsdale, New York in a battle of Raiders.

The game was tied 9-9 after one quarte but the Raiders dominated the second quarter, which proved to be the difference in the game, outscoring Scarsdale 17-2 to take a 26-11 halftime lead, an advantage Rummel would maintain in the second half. It was 44-23 after three quarters.

Senior Chase Marino led Rummel (13-4) with 12 points and three rebounds while TJ Duhe and Kendrick Joseph each had eight points.

Rummel advances to the title game to take on Radnor High of Pennsylvania in the championship game Thursday morning at 11 a.m.
