Basketball: Sophie B. Wright boys edge Newman, John Curtis girls handle Salmen
In a battle of highly ranked teams Wednesday night, visiting Sophie B. Wright fought off Newman 58-56.
The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Greenies (22-4) while the victory was the fifth straight for the Warriors (25-5).
Newman started well, taking a 17-10 lead after one quarter and held on to a 33-31 lead at halftime. Sophie B. Wright rallied to take a 47-45 lead after three quarters.
Charlie Russell led the Warriors with 18 points. Damiree Burns had 13 points and Scorey Holmes finished with 10 points. Javon Ruffin topped Newman with 19 points while Riley Demps added 13 points.
Sophie B. Wright returns to action Monday night, hosting Thomas Jefferson at 5 p.m. The Greenies face a District 12-2A showdown at Country Day Saturday at 6 p.m.
Defending Division I girls state champion John Curtis Christian rolled on, winning 68-48 over Salmen at River Ridge.
Jakayla Jordan was fabulous, pumping in 35 points and pulling down 14 rebounds in a tremendous performance for the Lady Patriots (24-1), who have won 17 straight games. Curtis is the top-ranked team in the state in the latest Division I power rankings.
Curtis returns to District 9-5A play this evening, hosting Mount Carmel at 6 p.m. The Spartans (20-7) return to District 8-4A play Friday night, hosting Lakeshore at 6 p.m.
