Basketball: Mandeville stays hot with win over Varnado, Mount Carmel travels to Dominican

Area Prep Basketball Report for Thursday, Jan. 9

Make it five straight wins for Mandeville.

The Skippers traveled to Varnado and came home with a 69-54 victory Wednesday evening.

Mandeville was led by senior Wil Sheppard and sophomore Bryce Weinmunson, each of whom scored 19 points. Sophomore Landon Ibieta scored 14 while junior Nathan Lambertson added 11 points.

The Skippers (14-6) return to District 6-5A play Friday at home against Slidell while Varnado (6-9) will host Kentwood Friday at 5 p.m.

In an important District 9-5A contest in girls action, Mount Carmel Academy plays at Dominican tonight at 6 p.m. in the district opener for both rivals.

The Cubs (15-4) have won nine of their last 10 games. Dominican (15-5) have won 14 of 16 games after a 1-3 start to the season.

Mount Carmel is second while Dominican is third in the most recent LHSAA Division I power rankings.
