Basketball: Crescent City and Slidell boys, De La Salle girls win Monday

Area Prep Basketball Report for Tuesday, Feb. 9

Crescent City Christian is the defending boys Division IV state champion.

Currently No. 1 in the Division IV power rankings this season, the Pioneers are getting hot at the right time.

Crescent City went on the road Monday evening and won its fifth straight game, dominating South Plaquemines 79-44.

Crescent City Christian jumped out to a 21-10 lead after one quarter and increased the lead to 47-18 by halftime. It was 62-31 after three quarters.

John Kelly led the Pioneers with 20 points and 10 rebounds, Derek Burditt Jr. had 17 points and four assists, Jordan Moore scored 14 points and Kurt LeBeaud had seven points and nine assists for Crescent City Christian.

Dykerrean Purvis led the Hurricanes with 11 points while Donaven Lightell finished with 10 points for South Plaquemines.

Crescent City Christian (15-6) returns to action next Monday, hosting Sophie B. Wright at 6 p.m. while South Plaquemines fell to 3-15 with the loss.

In District 6-5A, Slidell went to Ponchatoula and won 62-55.

Senior Lorenzo Caldwell pumped in 25 points and pulled down 16 rebounds, senior Cooper Rachow had 14 points and three assists and junior Micah Willis had 12 points for the Tigers. Caldwell sank 11-of-16 free throws.

Slidell (17-8, 6-3), currently 11th in the Class 5A power rankings, will host Covington at 7 p.m. while Ponchatoula (13-12, 4-4) will host Fontainebleau at 7:15 p.m.

In girls action, De La Salle downed Kenner Discovery 45-28 in Kenner in District 11-3A action.

It was the third straight win for the Cavaliers.

De La Salle took a 14-5 lead after one quarter and led 21-14 at halftime. It was 33-21 going to the final quarter.

Senior Emmia Johnson led De La Salle with 16 points, eight steals, five assists and four rebounds. Junior Alana Dumas and freshman Danai Lewis each scored 12 for the Cavs. Dumas added five steals and four assists while Lewis had a double-double with 10 rebounds and also had two blocks. Junior Isabella April topped Kenner Discovery with 11 points while sophomore Nataly Ochoa added eight points.

Both teams return to district play Thursday.

Currently seventh in the Division II power rankings, De La Salle (12-5, 2-0) plays at Ursuline Academy at 5:30 p.m. while the Swamp Owls (12-16, 0-2) play at Sacred Heart Academy at 6 p.m.
