Basketball: Brother Martin, Jesuit, Karr, Shaw boys; Newman girls win

Area Prep Basketball Report for Wednesday, Jan. 31

Brother Martin went to River Ridge and scored perhaps its biggest win of the season, downing John Curtis Christian 66-61 in District 9-5A play Tuesday night.

The Patriots took a 16-11 lead after one quarter and maintained a slim 28-27 halftime lead. The Crusaders tied it 45-45 going to the final quarter when they outscored John Curtis 16-11 for the win.

Eli Pichon led Brother Martin with 20 points, including four 3-pointers, and had nine assists, six rebounds and three steals. DJ Fowler added 18 points.

Mark Johnson topped John Curtis with 22 points and 14 rebounds while Michael Turner had 12 points and six rebounds.

Brother Martin (18-10, 3-5) snapped a four-game losing streak with the win. The Crusaders will host Karr Friday.

John Curtis (19-8, 5-3) lost its third straight game. The Patriots will play St. Augustine Friday night at St. Mary’s Academy.

It was the rubber game between Jesuit and Archbishop Rummel.

The Blue Jays beat the Raiders by a point in the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic.

The Raiders beat the Blue Jays at home by two points in district play.

Tuesday night, Jesuit got the upper hand at home, downing Rummel 40-31 at Benson Gymnasium in a District 9-5A contest.

Rummel took an 8-7 lead after one quarter before Jesuit shut down the Raiders in the second quarter to take a 17-11 halftime lead. The Raiders cut the deficit to 27-24 heading to the final quarter.

Jace Larsen topped Jesuit with 12 points while Will Sheridan scored eight points.

Senior Chase Marino led Rummel with 12 points while sophomore Ja’Mard Jones scored seven points.

Jesuit (17-9, 3-4) snapped a three-game losing streak and will return to district play at Holy Cross on Feb. 7.

Rummel (17-9, 3-4) will host Holy Cross Friday night in a district contest.

Karr edged Holy Cross 64-62 at home, also in District 9-5A play.

Kevin Slaughter led the Cougars with 14 points while Tyrone Wilson finished with 13 points.

Karr (11-14, 4-4) returns to district play Friday at Brother Martin at 7 p.m.

Archbishop Shaw remained red hot, winning for the seventh straight time, downing Helen Cox 62-52 on the road in the District 10-4A opener for both teams.

Kam Johnson continued his torrid scoring pace, pumping in 30 points, following a 36-point performance in a win over Catholic of Baton Rouge last Friday. Xavier Meyers added nine points.

Shaw (19-4) will play at Higgins in district play Friday night while the Cougars (5-20) will host McMain Thursday night.

In girls action, make it six straight wins for Newman.

The Greenies whipped St. Charles Catholic 47-32 in LaPlace in District 10-2A play.

Anaya Yunusah was dominant with 24 points and 14 rebounds while Sanaa Bean scored 16 points.

Mya Brown led the Comets with 22 points while Chavez Smith added six points.

Newman (17-5, 3-0) returns to district play Thursday at M.L. King Charter.

St. Charles Catholic (11-15, 2-1) saw its four-game win streak end and the Comets will play at Country Day Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
