Basketball: Bonnabel, Karr end opponent win streaks

Area Prep Basketball Report for Tuesday, Feb. 14

Bonnabel overcame deficits at halftime and in the fourth quarter to down McMain 64-60 at The Trap in Kenner.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 12-8 lead after one quarter and carried a 25-22 lead to halftime.

In the third quarter, the Bruins exploded, outscoring McMain 23-12 to take a 45-37 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Mustangs rallied to take a 47-45 lead but Bonnabel responded with a 17-4 run to take a 62-51 lead and held off McMain for a solid victory.

Jeremiah Lucas and Carlos Blue were a two-man gang for the Bruins with each scoring 23 points while Shawn Knight scored nine points.

Bonnabel (18-13) won its third straight game as the Bruins are making a push toward the playoffs. The Bruins conclude their regular season at East St. John Friday.

McMain (12-6) saw its five-game win streak end. The Mustangs return to District 9-4A play Tuesday at home against Kenner Discovery.

In the battle of Algiers area rivals, Karr whipped Landry 62-46 at home.

The win avenged a 67-60 loss to the Buccaneers on Nov. 24.

Landry started well, taking a 14-13 lead after one quarter before the Cougars took a 28-24 halftime lead. Karr led 39-35 going to the fourth quarter before dominating the final period.

Yqb Johnson led a balanced attack for Karr with 12 points while Keith Jones, Kevin Slaughter and Tyrone Wilson each added 11 points.

Vo Nicholas topped the Buccaneers with 21 points while Daryl Adams finished with 10 points for Landry.

Karr (15-16) will host Archbishop Rummel Thursday at 7 p.m. in the District 9-5A finale for both teams.

Landry (20-10) saw its six-game win streak end with the defeat. The Buccaneers host New Orleans Military & Maritime Tuesday at 6 p.m. in District 10-4A play.
