Baseball: St. Martin’s, Newman, John Curtis continue win streaks Wednesday

Area Prep Baseball Report for Thursday, April 14

In District 9-1A action Wednesday, St. Martin’s Episcopal blanked West St. John 10-0 in a game shortened to 4 ½ innings due to the mercy rule.

The Saints scored in every inning, taking a 1-0 lead after one inning before scoring five in the second to lead 6-0. St. Martin’s scored twice in the third and two in the fourth to finish it off.

Johnny Morreale and Shawn Shank each had a hit and an RBI while and David Helwig added an RBI for St. Martin’s.

Gavin Dimaggio pitched a one-hitter, striking out 10 while walking four to get the win, using 81 pitches.

St. Martin’s (10-14, 4-2) won its third straight game and will travel to Riverside Academy Friday at 4 p.m. West St. John (2-14, 0-8) has lost seven straight and will travel to Riverside next Tuesday.

In a non-district game, Newman blanked Riverdale 10-0 at Avenger Field in a game shortened to six innings by the mercy rule.

William Hewitt had a pair of hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Greenies. Watson Scriber picked up the win while Iv Guillot finished up on the mound for Newman. Scriber pitched five innings, allowing no runs on one hit, striking out five. The Greenies stole six bases.

Dufour took the loss for the Rebels.

Newman (14-11) has won three straight games and the Greenies return to District 11-2A play today at South Plaquemines at 4 p.m. Riverdale (14-9) saw its three-game win streak end. The Rebels return to District 8-5A action Tuesday at John Ehret at 4 p.m.

In another non-district contest, John Curtis Christian continued to roll winning 7-5 at H.L. Bourgeois for its seventh straight win.

The Patriots jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Braves rallied with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-4. Each team scored a run in the seventh inning.

John Curtis banged out 14 hits, led by Tulane commit Michael O’Brien, who was 3 for 3 with an RBI. Delgado commit Logan O’Neill had two hits and two RBI. Reed Duthu had two hits and an RBI while Buddy Micheu and Bryce Hebert each contributed a hit and an RBI.

Cameron Romano picked up the win, pitching four shutout innings, allowing one hit. Romano walked three and struck out six.

Kenny Campbell took the loss for H.L. Bourgeois, going five innings. Gavin Vordick had two hits, including a double with an RBI for the Braves.

John Curtis (17-9) will open a two-game District 9-5A series at Holy Cross Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

H.L. Bourgeois (17-10) saw its seven-game win streak end. The Braves will host East St. John Saturday at 11 a.m. in a District 7-5A contest.
