Area Prep Baseball Report for Friday, April 22

The expectation was clear.

St. Augustine was just a stepping stone for Brother Martin clinching a Catholic League title.

The Purple Knights did not get the memo.

Jeffery Duroncelay pitched six and a third strong innings and Genesis Prosper had two hits and drove in every St. Aug run as the Purple Knights shocked the Crusaders 4-2 at Wesley Barrow Stadium on Thursday night.

Prosper was the star of the game, delivering a big blow in the second inning with a base-clearing triple, giving St. Aug a 3-0 lead.

The Purple Knights extended the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Prosper.

Brother Martin finally got on the board in the top of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Walker Bazile. Eli Booth then singled home another run to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Prosper came on to get the final two outs to pick up the save after the Crusaders got two runners on base, including the tying run at second base. Prosper got the final out as Bryce Gauthier popped out and St. Augustine had just its second Catholic League win of the season and its biggest win of the year.

Duroncelay pitched an outstanding game to pick up the win.

Duroncelay allowed two runs on five hits. Duroncelay walked three and struck out three.

Anthony Mason took the loss, going three and a third innings, allowing four runs on five hits. Cole Navarro pitched three and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits and struck out one.

Judah Duroncelay added a pair of hits for the Purple Knights while Andrew Sieta had a pair of hits for the Crusaders.

With the Brother Martin loss, John Curtis Christian wins District 9-5A in outright fashion.

The Patriots have a good chance to pass Brother Martin for second in the power rankings Saturday when they play at St. Thomas Aquinas. The Falcons are a top two team in the Division III power rankings.

After starting 8-0 in district play, the Crusaders lost three of their last five league contests to let the Catholic League title slip away.

Brother Martin (22-7, 9-3) will be either the second or third seed in the Division I state playoffs. Archbishop Rummel can tie the Crusaders for second in the league with a win over Archbishop Shaw tonight.

St. Augustine (10-21, 2-10) has one game left, against Warren Easton Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The Purple Knights are likely to be the tenth seed in the Division I playoffs.

St. Charles Catholic took a huge step forward in challenging St. Thomas Aquinas for the top spot in the Division III playoffs with a 3-2 victory over Jesuit in LaPlace as the Comets remained red hot in their pursuit of the No. 1 seed in the Division III playoffs.

Jesuit scored a run in the top of the first on a walk to Keith Pittman, a double by Luke Brandau and an error, scoring Pittman.

The Blue Jays left the bases loaded in the top of the second inning and St. Charles Catholic got even with a run in the bottom of the second on an error to tie the score.

In the top of the sixth inning, Bronson Goebel doubled and scored on a double by Oddie Aucoin to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead.

The Comets rallied to win it with two runs in the sixth inning.

Brandau and Hunter Oufnac each had two hits for Jesuit.

Dillon Brown had a pair of hits and Ryan Laiche drove in a run for St. Charles Catholic.

Michael Hotard went the distance, scattering seven hits and struck out two for the victory.

Jake Moreci took the loss for Jesuit, going five and two-third innings, recording three strikeouts. Canaan Clayton finished up on the mound for the Blue Jays.

St. Charles Catholic (24-9) has won nine straight games. The Comets conclude their season at Thibodaux Saturday at 11 a.m.

Jesuit (20-12) concludes its season Saturday at Vandebilt Catholic.

The Blue Jays are locked in a battle for the fourth spot in the Division I playoffs with Byrd and Rummel.
