Baseball: Shaw, Rummel, Jesuit post Catholic League wins

Area Prep Baseball Report for Sunday, April 17

Archbishop Shaw registered its biggest win of the season Saturday afternoon, edging Brother Martin 4-3 at Winterscheidt Stadium.

The Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the first to lead 1-0 before the Crusaders tied it with a run in the top of the fourth. Shaw took a 2-1 lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth but the Crusaders scored twice in the top of the sixth to grab a 3-2 lead.

Shaw won it in walk-off fashion with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a dramatic victory.

Jayce LaCava was the star for Shaw, picking up the win in relief, pitching one and two-thirds scoreless innings. At the plate, LaCava was 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Justin Oubre started on the mound and pitched well, pitching five and a third innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits. Oubre walked three and struck out seven. At the plate, Oubre had two hits and an RBI. Cole Guidry added a hit and an RBI for the Eagles.

Sam Gernhauser took the loss in relief of Caden Durand for the Crusaders. Durand went four innings, allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with three walks and a strikeout. Gernhauser went two and a third innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, walking three and striking out one.

Frank Randol had two hits and an RBI while Andrew Sieta had a hit and an RBI for the Crusaders.

Shaw (16-14, 3-7) will host Archbishop Rummel Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Brother Martin (21-6, 8-2) will host St. Augustine Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

With the loss, Brother Martin dropped into a tie for the District 9-5A lead with John Curtis Christian, who did not play Saturday.

Archbishop Rummel moved within a game in the loss column of Brother Martin and John Curtis for the league lead with a 4-2 victory over Holy Cross at Mike Miley Stadium.

The Raiders took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning before the Tigers tied it with a run in the top of the third.

Rummel answered with a run in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead but Holy Cross responded again with a run in the fourth to tie the game.

The Raiders came through with two runs in the sixth inning to take the win.

Brady Ramon pitched a complete game, scattering nine hits. Ramon displayed great control, walking no one and striking out five, using 93 pitches.

Josh Sterling had an RBI single and Giancarlo Arencibia drove in a run for Rummel.

Will Andrade took the loss for Holy Cross in relief as the fourth pitcher of the day for the Tigers. Mason Smith had two hits and an RBI while Colin Cure had a hit and an RBI for Holy Cross.

Archbishop Rummel (16-13-1, 6-3) will travel to Tiger Park to face Holy Cross (11-18, 3-6) Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the series finale.

Jesuit remained fourth in the league, completing a two-game sweep of St. Augustine with a 10-0 victory at John Ryan Stadium in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

The Blue Jays got two runs in the first, two in the third, five runs in the fourth and finished it with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Holden Hess pitched a complete game shutout for Jesuit, allowing just two hits while striking out four. Hess ended the game with an RBI single in the fifth inning.

Jesuit took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, taking advantage of three errors by the Purple Knights.

The Blue Jays grew the lead to 4-0 with two runs in the third inning on an RBI triple by Hunter Oufnac before Oufnac scored on a passed ball.

Jesuit scored five runs in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Luke Brandau, a bases loaded walk to Hess, an RBI on a fielder’s choice grounder off the bat of Oufnac and a two-run triple by Bronson Goebel.

Tyrin Kirkland and Genesis Prosper each had a hit for the Purple Knights. Shannon Martin, the first of three pitchers for St. Augustine, took the loss.

Jesuit (18-11, 6-6) will step away from district play to travel to Belle Chasse Monday at 6 pm. St. Augustine (9-20, 1-9) will face Brother Martin Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
