Baseball: Riverdale and Holy Cross get combined pitching gems, Newman sweeps on Saturday

Area Prep Baseball Report for Sunday, March 3

In the Miller Motors Tournament on Saturday at Mike Miley Stadium, Riverdale blanked St. Martin’s Episcopal 6-0 as Michael Ford and Blake Hooper combined on a no-hitter. Ford went five innings, striking out six while Hooper went the final two innings, recording two strikeouts.

Ford was the hitting star, going 2-for-3 with two RBI while Jim Avila had a hit and scored a pair of runs.

Riverdale (7-1) has won six straight games. The Rebels return to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Warren Easton at Mike Miley Stadium.

Also in the tournament, Holy Cross blanked South Lafourche 3-0 at Tiger Park.

Matthew Watson and Chris Sercovich combined on the shutout. Watson went three scoreless innings, allowing one hit with a walk and a strikeout. Sercovich pitched the final four innings, allowing a hit with two strikeouts.

Jacob Pierce was the losing pitcher for the Tarpons, going six innings, allowing just one earned run on one hit with four walks and three strikeouts.

Dominic Pellegrin drove in a run with a sacrifice fly while Greg Ruiz had the lone hit for the Tigers.

Holy Cross (4-3) will play at Pope John Paul II Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

South Lafourche (4-3) will host Covington Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Newman swept a pair of games, beating Claiborne Christian 10-3 and defeating Family Community Christian 7-4 at the Trey Altick Tournament in Monroe.

In the win over Claiborne Christian, Christian Sauska had a hit and three RBI while Clayton Stevens drove in a pair of runs.

In the victory over Family Christian, the Greenies scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to win it. Charles Wilson had two hits and two RBI while Jack Nesser added a pair of hits.

Newman (6-1) has won six straight games and the Greenies will face Kenner Discovery Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
