Archbishop Rummel was supposed to make the trip north to Monroe to participate in the annual Trey Altick Tournament. A lot of rain produced poor field conditions and the Raiders chose to remain in south Louisiana, along with many other teams, playing games in the New Orleans and Baton Rouge areas.

The Raiders had a solid weekend, going 2-1 to improve their record to 7-1 overall, beating Walker and East Ascension while losing to defending Class 5A state champion Central. The Raiders currently sit atop the Division I power rankings early in the season, slightly ahead of defending state champion John Curtis Christian and St. Paul’s in a very talented classification.

On Sunday, Rummel pounded East Ascension 14-0 in Gonzales.

The Raiders have found an excellent second pitcher in three-way star and junior Ron Franklin. A year ago, Franklin was a jack-of-all-trades, playing the outfield and infield for Rummel while batting .304 with eight doubles, three triples, one home run and 23 RBI and stole 13 bases.

This year, Franklin has been called upon to take to the mound in the absence of Jackson Dennies, who is out for the season as he recovers from a serious knee injury suffered in football.

Franklin has answered the call, improving to 2-0 with his win over the Spartans Sunday.

Franklin pitched five shutout innings, allowing just one hit. He walked no one and struck out five in an impressive performance. At the plate, Franklin starred as well, going 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs batted in.

Senior catcher Jake Fury drove in four runs, senior outfielder Evan Francioni went 2-for-2 with an RBI and three runs scored and freshman outfielder Kolbe Fields was 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Raiders.

Rummel returns to action Tuesday night at Fontainebleau at 6:30 p.m. in the rematch. The Bulldogs (4-5) lost 5-4 to Rummel on Feb. 24 in the WGNO Classic.
