In Class 5A, the third time was not the charm for No. 22 Ponchatoula.

Instead, No. 11 Northshore handled its District 6-5A rival for a third consecutive time, winning 7-1 in the opening round of the state playoffs Monday at Slidell.

Dillon Sabathe drove in a run in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead.

Northshore broke it open in the bottom of the third with six runs. The highlights included Christian Garcia with an RBI double, Evan Sauvage had an RBI single and Preston Ratliff added a two-run single and it was 7-0. The Green Wave averted a shutout with a run in the seventh inning on an RBI by Cody Flynn.

Jeremy Martin got the win for the Panthers (21-9) while Collin Babin took the loss for the Green Wave (17-15). Ratliff had three hits for Northshore while Sabathe drove in two runs. Logan Virga had two hits for Ponchatoula.

Northshore advances to the regional round to travel to No. 6 Ruston in a best-of three series. The Bearcats downed No. 27 New Iberia 11-1.

Also in 5A, top seed Barbe shutout No. 32 Chalmette 5-0.

The game was scoreless through three innings before the Bucs took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on a pair of errors by Chalmette and a bases loaded walk to Kyle Debarge. David singled home a run to make it 3-0, a throwing error added another run to make it 4-0 and Barbe tacked on one more to account for the margin of victory.

Mississippi State commit Jack Walker pitched the shutout for the Buccaneers (32-3). UNO commit Antoine Harris took the loss for the Owls (15-13).

Barbe advances to take on defending state champion and No. 17 Central in Baton Rouge in the regional round best-of-three. Central edged No. 16 Sulphur 2-0.

In another 5A contest, No. 9 Live Oak defeated No. 24 Hahnville 3-1.

Sal Palermo went the distance, allowing just one run on six hits and he struck out four for the victory. Palermo helped himself with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning to make it 1-0. Lane Hutchinson also had a sacrifice fly in the fourth and it was 2-0.

Hahnville cut the deficit in half on an RBI double by Collin Maise to make it 2-1 but Kody Guidry got the run back with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to finish the scoring.

With the win, Live Oak (24-10) advances to the regional round for a best-of-three series against the winner of the game between eighth-seeded Acadiana and No. 25 Alexandria.

In Class 4A, No. 9 Salmen downed No. 24 Belle Chasse 3-1 in Slidell.

Dionte Norris went the distance and struck out nine to pick up the win. Jordan Rushing had an RBI single for the Spartans.

Charles Burt provided the only run for the Cardinals on a hole run. Matt St. Pe did not allow an earned run in six innings but took the loss for Belle Chasse (14-17).

Salmen (16-12) advances to face the winner of No. 8 Neville and No. 25 Franklin Parish in a best-of-three series.
