Baseball: Newman, John Curtis win in Mike Robertson Memorial Tournament

Area Prep Baseball Report for Sunday, March 13

A friend and, wonderful coach and man of faith, Mike Robertson served John Curtis Christian School faithfully and in superb fashion over the course of four decades.

Robertson passed away in 2016 but he is memorialized by Curtis with the Mike Robertson Memorial Baseball Tournament annually.

On Saturday, Newman edged St. Augustine 5-4.

William Hewitt drove in the game-winner in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Purple Knights scored early on a bases loaded walk to Judah Duroncelay in the top of the first inning.

St. Aug scored three runs in the top of the second with Genesis Prosper and Shannon Martin driving in the runs before Newman would rally.

Jack Robert and Iv Guillot each had two hits to pace the Newman attack.

Tucker Joseph got the win for the Greenies, pitching 5 1/3 innings in relief, allowing no runs on five hits, striking out seven with no walks in relief of Wyatt Biever. Ryan Stripling took the loss for the Purple Knights, allowing four runs on four hits in two innings pitched in relief of Bryce Robinson.

In the Mike Robertson Memorial Tournament, John Curtis Christian outslugged South Lafourche 18-9.

John Curtis jumped on the Tarpons with five runs in the bottom of the first inning and led 5-1 after two innings. The Patriots scored three in the third inning to make it 8-1. Each team scored four runs in the fourth inning and it was 12-5.

South Lafourche cut the deficit to 12-8 with three runs in the top of the fifth but Curtis put the game away with six runs in the sixth inning. The Tarpons got their final run in the seventh inning.

Austin Ackel belted a pair of home runs and drove in five runs while Bruno Dagan had two hits and three RBI. Mason Despaux and Duthu Reed each added had two hits and two RBI as part of an 11-hit attack.

Deuce Cheramie had a home run, double, single and drove in three runs for South Lafourche. Jacob Curole and Joshua Pierce each drove in a pair of runs for the Tarpons.

The Patriots (6-6) will play Monday at E.D. White Catholic at 4 p.m. South Lafourche (5-7) will host Central Lafourche Tuesday at 6 p.m.
