Baseball: John Curtis beats PJP; Slidell edges Chalmette, St. Aug tops Riverside, Jesuit stays perfect

Area Prep Baseball Report for Saturday, March 20

In the Archbishop Shaw tournament, John Curtis Christian bounced back from loss to Newman with a 6-2 victory Friday over Pope John Paul II.

The Jaguars took the lead with two runs in the top of the second but Curtis answered with five runs in the bottom of the second before adding a run in the fourth inning.

Josh Lopez picked up the win, going three innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Lopez walked three and struck out two. Cameron Romano and Michael Curtis each pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

Freshman Brad Chiasson led the offensive charge with two hits, including a triple, and four RBI. Reggie Bergeron had a hit and an RBI and Buddy Micheu had a double for the Patriots.

Collin Cahill took the loss for the Jaguars, going four innings, allowing six runs but only one earned on four hits. Cahill walked two and struck out seven. Brady Pisciotta finished up on the mound with two scoreless innings. Cahill had a hit and two RBI while Michael August had two hits for Pope John Paul II.

John Curtis (8-3) will face Thomas Jefferson Saturday at 4 p.m. while Pope John Paul II (7-3) will play at Archbishop Shaw Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Slidell edged Chalmette 3-2 at home in the Mandeville/Slidell Tournament.

The Owls scored a run in the top of the first but Slidell took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Tigers made it 3-1 with a run in the fifth and Chalmette scored a run in the seventh but it was not enough.

Cameron Weiss did all of the damage for Slidell, going 3-for-3 with all three RBI. Jayden Raines added a pair of hits for the Tigers.

Noah Hughes picked up the win, going five and 2/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits. Hughes walked six and struck out six.

Slidell (8-10) will host De La Salle Saturday at 4:30 p.m. while Chalmette (6-8) will face Archbishop Hannan at 11 a.m. at Mandeville.

St. Augustine won at Riverside Academy 11-6.

The Purple Knights jumped all over the Rebels early, scoring three runs in the top of the first, one in the second and six more in the top of the third to take a commanding 10-0 lead.

The Rebels scored five times in the bottom of the fifth and once in the sixth to cut the deficit to 10-6 but St. Aug added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

Riverside committed four errors.

Jardy Montgomery had three hits for the Purple Knights while Kabrel Johnson had two hits and three RBI and Jeffrey Duroncelay added a pair of hits.

Ryan Stripling pitched four shutout innings, striking out nine to pick up the win for St. Augustine.

St. Augustine (10-5) will play at Loranger Saturday at 11 a.m. while Riverside (4-11) will host Kenner Discovery Monday at 4 p.m.

In the Hahnville Tournament, Jesuit remained unbeaten with an easy 11-0 win over Central Lafourche in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

William Good went three innings, striking out five to pick up the win. JP Hernandez relieved Good in the fourth inning and hurled a shutout frame before Chris Webre finished up with a scoreless fifth inning.

Good helped his cause with an RBI double and an RBI single.

The Blue Jays scored six runs in the top of the second inning, including Good’s RBI double while Giovanni Licciardi had a two-run double and Zack Casebonne had an RBi single to highlight the uprising.

University of New Orleans commit Collin Loupe drove in a pair of runs in the third inning to make it 8-0.

Good’s RBI single in the fourth made it 9-0 and in the top of the fifth, Wegmann capped the scoring with a two-run double.

Camden Plaisance, Jace Morvant and Zach Hodson each had a hit for Central Lafourche. Colby Guidry took the loss for the Trojans, going three innings, allowing five runs on six hits. Hodson pitched the final two innings.

Jesuit (16-0) will play at Destrehan at noon Saturday while the Trojans (1-15) face Archbishop Rummel at 11 a.m. Saturday.
