Baseball: De La Salle, Mandeville, Newman, Kenner Discovery with solid wins Wednesday

In prep baseball action Wednesday, De La Salle scored an impressive 7-2 win at St. Paul’s.

The Cavaliers trailed 1-0 after two innings before scoring three runs in the top of the third and four in the fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead. The Wolves added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Chad Rousse Jr. was excellent on the mound, doing six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. Rousse walked one and struck out six. Bryce Hingle pitched a scoreless seventh inning, striking out two. Hingle added a single, RBI and two runs scored at the plate.

Ty Poole doubled and drove in three runs while Dylan Brisset had a triple and two RBI.

Easton LeBlanc had two hits for St. Paul’s while Cooper Winchester drove in a run.

De La Salle (5-2) will host Covenant Christian Friday at 7 p.m.

St. Paul’s (5-5) will play at Lakeshore Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Mandeville scored an impressive 6-1 home victory over Jesuit for its seventh straight win.

The game was tied 1-1 into the bottom of the fourth inning when Mandeville scored three runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Skippers added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Mason Hickman had three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs for Mandeville. Wes Carr added a hit and an RBI and Peyton Lirette drove in a run.

Aidan Grab pitched five innings to pick up the win, allowing just one run on two hits. Grab walked six and struck out seven. Cam Cressend pitched two scoreless innings.

Patrick Berrigan drove in the lone Jesuit run on a bases loaded walk. Everett Denny took the loss.

Mandeville (8-1) travels to St. Michael today at 3:30 p.m.

The Blue Jays (6-4) will open District 9-5A play next Tuesday against St. Augustine.

Newman stayed hot, drilling Haynes Academy 9-1 at Avenger Park for its eighth straight win.

The Greenies scored three runs in the bottom of the first before Haynes scored a run in the second to make it 3-1. Newman answered with single runs in the second and third innings and broke it open with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Charles Wilson went 3-for-3 with two RBI while Christian Sauska had two hits and two RBI and scored twice. Clayton Stevens added a hit and an RBI. Tyler Zweifler was the winning pitcher, going four innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits. Zweifler walked four and struck out one. Guy Guidroz pitched a scoreless inning while Ethan Dulitz pitched he final two scoreless innings, allowing no hits.

Lucas Surcouf took the loss the Yellow Jackets, going three innings, allowing eight runs (two earned) with seven walks and three strikeouts. Brady Cribby pitched the final three innings, allowing just one run. Payton Drumm drove in the only run for Haynes.

Newman (8-1) hosts Holy Cross Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Avenger.

Haynes (3-5) takes on Warren Easton tonight at 7 p.m.

Kenner Discovery rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge South Plaquemines 8-6.

Julian Caronna ended it in dramatic fashion with a 3-run home run. Brayden Netterville added two hits and two RBI while Jonathan Lawson had two hits and an RBI.

Madden Williams picked up the win, going six innings, allowing no earned runs on two hits. Williams walked four and struck out 14.

Evan Ballay had a hit and two RBI for the Hurricanes.

The Swamp Owls (6-6) will play today at John Ehret at 3:30 p.m. while South Plaquemines (1-3) entertains Houma Christian today at 4 p.m.

Archbishop Hannan remained unbeaten against in-state opposition, edging St. Thomas Aquinas 3-2 in Hammond.

Hannan led 1-0 after one inning before the Falcons took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Hawks scored two runs in the top of the fifth to win it.

Brody Smith and Jay Lachney each had a hit and an RBI for Hannan while Austin Pounds added an RBI. Patrick Kennedy picked up the win in relief, going 2.1 innings, allowing no runs on a hit. Kennedy walked two and struck out one.

Hannan (10-1) has lost only to Vincent (AL). The Hawks play at Pope John Paul II Friday at 6:30 p.m.

St. Thomas Aquinas (0-11) will host Fontainebleau Monday at 6:30 p.m.
