Area Prep Baseball Report for Thursday, April 4

A year ago, Brother Martin won the District 9-5A baseball championship.

That much sought-after title was great but the euphoria was short-lived as the Crusaders fell in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Jesuit and Archbishop Rummel reached the Select Division I state championship game which the Blue Jays won 1-0.

A year later, all three teams are in the race to win a district championship.

Wednesday night, things started very well for Jesuit in the first game of its series with Brother Martin at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

The Blue Jays scored four runs in the top of the first inning.

That momentum would not last very long. In fact, it was a fleeting moment.

Brother Martin seized the night, answering with four runs in the bottom of the first and going on to score 14 unanswered runs in a convincing 14-4 victory in a game shortened to six innings by the mercy rule.

The Crusaders pounded Jesuit pitching for 15 hits, led by Navarro, who went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI and Cody Kropp, who had three hits. Frank Randol had two hits and two RBI and Egan Prather contributed two hits and an RBI. Jack Lupo and Reece Roussel each had a hit and an RBI.

After the rough start, Cole Navarro settled in, not allowing another run, to get the win. Navarro allowed just two earned runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Jake Moreci took the loss, allowing six runs in 2 1/3 innings for Jesuit (15-8, 3-3). Derek Delatte had a hit and two RBI while Everett Denny had two doubles. Marshal Serio added a hit and an RBI for the Blue Jays.

Brother Martin (16-7, 5-2) has won three straight games and is just a game behind Rummel for the district lead.

The two teams play the second game of the series tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

In a key District 6-5A game, Mandeville routed St. Paul’s 12-0.

Aidan Grab pitched four scoreless innings, striking out six to get the win.

Wes Carr, Kyle Charrier, Mason Hickman and Michael Scott each had two hits for the Skippers.

Mandeville (19-6, 4-1) returns to action tonight at 6:15 p.m. for Senior Night at home against Hammond.

The Wolves (13-10, 3-2) are at Ponchatoula tonight at 6:30 p.m.

Lakeshore completed a District 8-4A sweep of Archbishop Hannan, winning 6-2 at Hannan.

The Titans carried a 2-1 lead into the top of the fifth inning when they scored four runs to decide it. Gavin Stein produced a 2-run single while Reese Sanzone added an RBI single in the big inning. Kyle Gegenhemier added two hits and an RBI for Lakeshore.

Hannan got a run in the bottom of the fifth to complete the scoring.

Owen Guth pitched a complete game, scattering eight hits, to get the win. Guth walked two and struck out five.

Austin Pounds took the loss. Pounds had a hit and an RBI while Sammy Loeb added two hits for Hannan.

The Titans (11-14, 6-2) return to district play Friday, hosting Franklinton at 3:30 p.m.

The Hawks (15-9, 4-4) play at Pearl River Friday at 6:30 p.m.

In a non-district contest, Chalmette rallied to defeat H.L. Bourgeois 9-5 at Noel Suarez Stadium.

The Braves led 2-1 into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Owls scored four runs to take a 5-2 lead. Chalmette broke it open with four more runs in the sixth to make it 9-2 before H.L. Bourgeois scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Marcus Campbell had two hits, including a double with three RBI while Bryce Wilson added two hits and an RBI. Malek Jupiter and Jayden Williams each drove in a run.

Chalmette (22-4) will host Archbishop Rummel Friday at 6:30 p.m. in a non-district contest.

H.L. Bourgeois (11-15) returns to District 7-5A play at Central Lafourche tonight at 6 p.m.
