Softball: St. Charles Catholic, Newman, St. James with close wins Wednesday

Area Prep Softball Report for Thursday, May 28

In a showdown of Select softball contenders, St. Charles Catholic edged Archbishop Hannan 4-3 Wednesday, snapping an 11-game win streak for the Hawks.

Kamryn Cancienne picked up the win, going the distance, allowing six hits with seven strikeouts.

Adrienne Arnett led the offense with two hits and two RBI while Alyse Chauvin had a hit and an RBI. Rylee San Andres had an RBI.

St. Charles Catholic (14-4), second in the Select Division III power ratings, returns to action Monday, hosting Ascension Catholic at 4 p.m.

The Hawks (21-5), second in the Select Division II power ratings, will entertain Catholic-Pointe Coupee next Wednesday at 3 p.m.

In a District 10-2A matchup, Newman edged Country Day 11-10 in a thriller.

Newman jumped out to a big lead early, scoring four times in the bottom of the first and six times in the bottom of the second after Country Day had scored three runs in the top of the second inning and the Greenies led 10-3.

The Cajuns scored four runs in the top of the third inning to cut the deficit to 10-7 and added two runs in the top of the fifth to pull within 10-9. Newman answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth and it was 11-9. Country Day scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to account for the final margin.

Jesse Lambert picked up the win for Newman, going five innings. Lambert was the hitting star, producing four hits, including a home run with three RBI. Felicity Drake had two hits and an RBI. Sydney Able picked up the save.

Maggie Schneider had four hits and drove in five runs for Country Day. Mia Ennis took the loss and Ennis added a hit and an RBI for the Cajuns.

Newman (10-3, 1-0), 13th in the Select Division power ratings, will entertain St. Mary’s Academy Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Country Day (18-3, 1-2), ninth in the Select Division III power ratings, returns to action next Monday at St. Amant at 5 p.m.

In an even wilder contest, St. James outscored South Terrebonne 19-18 on the road.

Each team scored four runs in the first inning and two runs in the second. St. James took a 9-6 lead with three runs in the top of the fourth inning and pushed the lead to 17-6 with eight runs in the top of the fifth.

The Gators roared back with five runs in the bottom of the fifth and seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 18-17 lead.

St. James scored twice in the top of the seventh to pull out the win.

Sa’Vya Sutherland produced four hits and two RBI, eighth-grader Colbie Mitchell had two hits and four RBI while Shiya Steib had three hits and two RBI to pace the Wildcats. Freshman Tierney Zenon had a hit and two RBI. Mhallayah Picou and eighth-grader Faith Reulet each had two hits and an RBI as St. James banged out 16 hits.

The Wildcats (9-12) return to District 8-3A play today at 5 p.m. at home against Berwick.

South Terrebonne (6-13) returns to District 7-4A play today at 4 p.m. at South Lafourche.
