Prep Softball Playoff Report for Tuesday, April 16

John Curtis Christian has been perhaps the best softball program in Louisiana since the turn of the century.

The Patriots have won 12 state titles since 2003, trailing only Vandebilt Catholic (14) for the most championships in Louisiana history. This year’s squad is a real threat to win a 13th title.

John Curtis began its quest for No. 13 with an 11-0 win Monday over No. 15 Riverdale in the regional round of the Select Division I playoffs.

The Patriots (22-6) advance to the quarterfinals to face No. 7 St. Joseph’s Academy.

The Redstickers edged No. 10 Dominican 3-2 in nine innings at Oak Villa Park.

Dominican (13-17) led 2-1 and was three outs away from a win when St. Joseph’s (22-6) rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie it and extended it to extra innings.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Georgia Millian singled home Molly Ashworth with the game-winning run. Ashworth singled to start the inning and advanced to second on an error. Millian had three hits and an RBI to lead St. Joseph’s.

Ana-Grace Garcia went the distance to get the win, allowing two runs on 11 hits.

Aubrey Daigrepont pitched well but took the loss for Dominican.

Delaney Durr had three hits and an RBI while Maddie Branch had two hits to pace the Dominican attack.

In the Select Division II regional round, No. 5 Haynes Academy defeated No. 12 Kenner Discovery 8-4 at the JPRD Complex.

The Yellow Jackets led 2-0 after one inning but the Swamp Owls scored four runs in the top of the second inning, taking a 4-2 lead. Haynes bounced right back with two runs in the bottom of the second inning to tie it 4-4 and added a run in the third to make it 5-4. The Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a base-clearing double by Rylan Barras to complete the win. Ava Palumbo had three hits and two RBI and Ella Lewis drove in three runs for Haynes, who left 13 runners on base.

Hailey Peterson (19-6) picked up the win, going the distance, allowing seven hits with four strikeouts.

Liza Biancato took the loss for Kenner Discovery (11-12), allowing five hits with 10 walks and four strikeouts. Claudia Grassel homered and drove in all four runs for the Swamp Owls, Kiley Tingle had two hits, including a double and Brinley Muller added two hits.

Haynes (20-6) advances to the quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive year to face the winner of this evening’s game pitting No. 13 Lafayette Christian against No. 4 E.D. White Catholic, who play at 5 p.m. in Thibodaux.

In Non-Select Division IV action, No. 5 French Settlement downed No. 12 Mangham 8-3.

The Lions scored single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. French Settlement added two runs in the fourth and broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Dragons scored three runs in the seventh inning.

Senior Emma Petite went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI and eighth-grader Remie Gautreau had two hits, including a triple with three RBI. Sophomore Stella Addison and freshman Malloy Miles each had two hits and an RBI for French Settlement.
