The streak is over for Catholic High.

The storied Bears swim program saw its four-year stranglehold on the Division I boys state swimming championship come to an end in Sulphur Saturday.

Jesuit saw to that, easily outdistancing the Bears to capture the 2017 Division I title at SPAR Aquatic Center.

While Catholic has been the dominant program of late, it is Jesuit that has been the dominant program in the state in the sport’s history. The championship is the 38th state title for the Blue Jays in the pool.

Charles Korndorffer was the star for Jesuit, winning both the 100 meter butterfly and 100-meter backstroke. Jesuit swept the relay races to pull away for the team title, winning the 200 medley, the 200 freestyle and the 400 freestyle. Adam Coigner of Archbishop Rummel won the 100-meter breaststroke.

It was the 16th state title for Jesuit coach Bret Hanemann.

Northshore finished third with St. Paul’s fourth and Lafayette fifth.

St. Scholastica capped off an unbeaten season, captured the girls Division II state championship in demonstrative fashion, with the closest team, second-place St. Thomas More, finishing 263 points behind the Doves. Academy of The Sacred Heart of New Orleans was third with Alexandria fourth. Destrehan finished fifth.

Gabriella O’Neil won the 200 meter freestyle and the 500-meter freestyle to lead the Doves while Gabriella Fouchi took the 50 meter freestyle for SSA. The Doves won the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays.

St. Joseph’s Academy won the girls Division I team title with Mount Carmel a competitive second. Mandeville was third with Northshore fourth and Baton Rouge High fifth.

Hannah Morris of Dominican won the 200 meter medley and the 500-meter freestyle in an outstanding individual performance. Maddie Byrd of Northshore also doubled her pleasure, winning the 100 meter backstroke and the 100 meter butterfly. Maggie Beyrau of Fontainebleau took first in the 50 meter freestyle while Emily Schexnayder of Mount Carmel took the 100-meter freestyle.

Ruston won the boys Division II state championship with Holy Cross coming in second. Lakeshore was third with Destrehan fourth and Alexandria fifth.

The Bearcats won eight of the 11 individual and team events to dominate the class. Lane Coleman of Holy Cross won the 100 meter butterfly while Owen Martin of Thomas Jefferson was the star, sweeping the 200 IM and 500 freestyle.
